ThaMark 0 Posted February 7, 2004 So I finaly made the big stap, starting with Linux. I am using Mandrake 9.2 with Gnome. Now I have a few problems, of which I have no clue on how 2 solve. So let's make a little list :-) 1) Somehow the text on this (and most other websites) is freaking bad 2 read, it is very small and pixel like. Where can I change it so that it will use the website default (or atlease more Internet Explorer Like). I am using Galeon (same stuff happens with Mozilla) 2) During installing it said my soundcard is a Creative 5.1. Live, and this is correct. Under WinXP it works., but somehow it does not work under linux. Where can I reinstall it, and how (which driver) 3) I tried 2 use Gaim for MSN and ICQ. For ICQ it is working, but for MSN it is not. It reports that "The protocol is not installed" or something like that, howevery I can select tit is a MSN acount. What can I do 2 fix that 4)The desktop that I have (1024x768) looks good, howevery the Images on the deskop are big with allot of space between them.... makiing it so that you can only get 6 pictures from left to right..... how can I make the pictures, text and spaces in between smaller ? 5) Somehow Linux sees the 2 Windows paritions as Read Only. THey are bouth Fat32 formatted, and they appear in the /mnt instead of the /dev. So I cannot write any files 2 those directories. What do I have 2 do 2 enable the writing from Linux onto a fat32 partition So that is it..... I hope You will not Kill me for the big list of questions, but after 2 hours of googling, this seams 2 be the best spot 2 ask. My ICQ nummer is in my profile, I am online most of the time, if you need more info.... Let me hear ;( Greetz, Mark EDIT: added question nummer 5 :x Share this post Link to post
ThaMark 0 Posted February 7, 2004 Well some issues have been solved. The sound problem is not a problem... somehow it was standard on Mute ;( The icon problem and text problem I have solved, by changeing the resolution 2 1280x9.. , so that also isn't a issue anymore. Problem that I still have, is gaim. I deleted 0.68, and installed 0.75. That was all successfil, except I have no clue now on how 2 start gaim. Wenn I click on the RPM file it says it allready has been installed......... but how 2 run the program is still one big Question. I am running Mandrake 9.2 with Gnome....... (not much responses for a 539 member forum on a saterday ) Share this post Link to post
Dapper Dan 0 Posted February 7, 2004 Most people just cruise and shop. Only a few of us ever try to help. For Gaim, it should be as simple as opening a terminal and typing: gaim [enter] Share this post Link to post

For Gaim, it should be as simple as opening a terminal and typing: gaim [enter] LOL........ hmmz.... should have thought about that one It works, thx, super :-) There are only 3 things I am still looking for, I found some info and names, but still have no idea how to do it: I am running a netwerk at home, with 2 other win98se computers, one of them having a hp PSC 2110 machine behind is (Printing, Scanning, Copying). I would like 2 be able 2 have access 2 the files of those computers, ands also 2 add the printer. I think I need something called sambar, but could not find any other info about it, so I might be wrong. Also I still have the problem of my fat32 partitions being readonly, in the /mount........ really need it 2 become readable. Maybe of someone can help me on the way with this stuff ? All other problems have been solved Share this post Link to post
Dapper Dan 0 Posted February 8, 2004 To share files between W98 and Linux, you will need samba. I've never installed or used it before so I couldn't help there. One of the others here should be able to give you some direction with samba though. Can you see the files in your fat32 partition? You should be able to write and read them both, at least that is the way MDK 9.0 always did it. It may be as simple as changing permissions on the files themselves, or becoming root before trying to read/write. open a terminal and type: su [enter] enter password and enter. Now open up konqueror.. konqueror [enter] and go to your windows in /mnt and see if you can read and write now... Share this post Link to post
ThaMark 0 Posted February 8, 2004 It works, great. Is there a way 2 make sure that wenn Mandrake and Gnome start up, and I login, I am automaticly also logged in as the Super User (root) ? Samba..... LOL that is why I did not find anything on SambaR Thx for your help Dan..... now I also understand why it takes this long for help....... you and probebly most members here are from the USA...... so a little time difference with Europe I am going 2 sleep now..... have a nice Lunch goodn8 (afternoon :x ) Share this post Link to post
Dapper Dan 0 Posted February 8, 2004 So you'll get this in the morning..Right now I'm drinking sour mash and will soon enjoy a beef loin I'm cooking on the grill.. You don't want to be root except when you are installing or uninstalling or doing general maintainance type things. When you are root, there is no protection! You can completely remove your /usr directory, and Linux will let you! Only become root to do and fix things, and still do them with caution! During regular computing, always do as a regular user. ThaMark 0 Posted February 8, 2004 K. I'm trying out samba and my Printer and stuff, if it doesn't work I'll let ya hear. BTW: Why do you call yourself Dapper Dan ? What does it mean in the USA..... because I am dutch, and bouth words are Dutch aswell Share this post Link to post
jimf43 0 Posted February 8, 2004 Quote: BTW: Why do you call yourself Dapper Dan ? In US English, a 'Dapper Dan' is the equivilent of an English 'Rake' or 'Dandy' Share this post Link to post
Dapper Dan 0 Posted February 8, 2004 I started using it as a gaming name when playing Team Fortress, and still do. Did you see the Cohen Brothers movie "Oh, Brother Where Art Thou?" It's a few years old, but is ROFL hysterical, especially if you're a Southerner! In the movie, the main character, played by Nick Clooney is always fussing with, and is very particular about his hair. He uses a special hair pomade called "Dapper Dan." That's why I chose the name. ThaMark 0 Posted February 9, 2004 aha ok. I asked, because DAN is the Dutch word for Then Dapper is Dutch for Breave, Fearless So "Dapper Dan" means "More Fearless Then" Anyway, te get back on topic. The stuff is working fine now. Last problem I have is, the Network printer. I have a HP 2110 PSC hanging behind a Win98SE computer..... everything here is connected trough localnetwerk. How can I get the netwerkprinter installed. Trough the controlpannel I can add it 2 the list, but I have no idea what 2 put in the "location" spot. So wenn I make a testpage, nothing happens. All computes in my network get a dynamic Ip, trough DHCP, everything in the rage of 192.168.0.10 till 14, the Linux Router (FreeSCO) is hanging on 192.168.0.50, and there is one computer (my computer) which gets a ip of 192.168.0.40 (given on basis of computername, needed for my portmapping) Does anyone know how I can add it. I use like I menchiant (spelled that wrong I thin) before, Mandrake 9.2 with Gnome... BTW a 2nd small question: Does it make much difference if you use Gnome or Kde (or a otherone), or is the installprocess the same?. Because I am trying the stuff out now, and looking for software and info, and wenn I understand it all, and I get my new mouse and 2nd Harddisk, I reinstall it all newly, maybe with a different WinE desktop. 3rd small question: Do Unix aps run on Linux?. This because of my studie, It would be nice if I could run Catia v4 here, which is a CAD design programma for Unix. So, that was it, read the answer at my evening (your lunch ) It 01:00 here now, dunno howmuch GTM you guys live, I am at +1 GTM Share this post Link to post
Mel 0 Posted February 11, 2004 Try going to the link posted in "General Linux/HP Drivers for Scanners, and Printers and All in Ones." Download the file "hpoj-9.1.tgz". It has the files needed for HP2110. I haven't had time to set it up yet so I can't say if it works.(I'm just an old man with heart problems and feeling run down the last few days.) Anyway, Linux seems to have problems with "all in ones". I did get Arklinux to recognize my psc 2210 but need to add another file to scan. I only have a couple months experience with Linux so don't want to give advice since I'm not sure what I'm doing yet.But I do think someone who knows what he's doing can get that file to work. Plenty of documentation is with the file once unpacked. Share this post Link to post
ThaMark 0 Posted February 13, 2004 THx for the help, but I fixed it allready. Very strange though. I think I have been hacked, because suddenly all 3 OS's on my Computer where dead (linux, win98 and winxp) and other computers in my networks had also crashed, but no lasting softwaredamage there. Anyway, wenn I started installing it newly, it suddenly did detect the printen (before the installing was done). So now it works, and, in contrast 2 someone else on this forum, it is working super fast as if it is a local printer... timedelay of les then a sec.. However, 2 strange problems have turned up, and I also have 1 question. First Problem: Somehow wenn I start OpenOfficeWriter 1.1 it takes about 30 secs, then suddenly it pops up. Other applications run as normal seconds Problem: Somhow wenn I go 2 make some Samba Shortcuts/joints it says that there is a problem with the partitions. However the windows OS have no problems, and within Linux I also can simply write and read from all Partitions, including the Fat32 partitions. Bouth problems did not occure last install.... and the question: how can I change my MSN name wenn I am using Gain 0.75.... I still cannot find that option, which is a bit enoying. If it is not possible, does someone know a other Linux App that combines ICQ and MSN in one programma that those enably me 2 change my MSN and ICQ alias? Share this post Link to post
