lager_brains 0 Posted June 4, 2001 Hi, I have two computers connected together in a small network, and which I can toggle between using a KVM switch box. Is there a way I can 'share' my outlook messages. In other words from which ever computer I open Outlook, I'd like to see the same messages, same contacts etc etc. I log into each computer under a different name and of course each computer puts the outlook.pst file within it's respective C:\My Documents\Local Settings\application data\Microsoft\Outlook\ folder (by memory, so might be wrong). So there are seperate outlook.pst files for each computer. Can I not have them pointing to the same place ?? If so, how ?? Don't tell me registry edit (I don't feel confident touching the registry) Many thanks, Share this post Link to post

Down8 0 Posted June 5, 2001 The way I back up my Outlook mail is thru a scheulded batch file. I havea simple btch-file that just copies the oulook.pst to a back up folder every night at 5am [the time I'm least liekly to be on my computer]. Conceivably, you could map one of the drives, write a similar batch-file, and hav it run every half-hour or hour, so as to keep them synced [also allows for having multiple copies, if something were to go wrong]. This isn't a constant sync though, so you may want something different. -bZj PS: Not to be a jerk, but could you shrink you signature a bit? It almost takes up a full page on my 20" monitor. Or, just try to untick the box unless your specs are necessary. Share this post Link to post
three 0 Posted June 5, 2001 This is how I would configure to share folders. As for the address book, I have not figured it out. 1. Create 2 folders. For example, folder 1 "Outlook Backup" and folder 2 "Outlook Share". 2. Run Outlook and select Tools->Options->Maintenance->Store Folder. This shows where your folders are stored. Go to that directory and copy all the files over to your "Outlook Backup" (do copy/paste and not cut/paste as you want to leave the original files in the original folder, this step is incase something goes wrong in the process, that way you have the backups) 3. Go back to the Tools->Options->Maintenance->Store Folder and this time click on the change button. Find the "Outlook Share" directory that you created and click OK. It will then prompt you with a msg that says it will not change unless you restart Outlook. Click ok. 4. Restart Outlook and it should move all your folders automatically to the new folder. Double check by accessing the 'Outlook Share' folder and you should see all the DBX files there. 5. Repeat Step 3 with other computer(s). This time outlook will detect that there are already messages stored in the folder and ask if you want to switch to using that folder instead. Click on YES. If you click NO, then all the folders will be deleted! That is what the Backup folder is for . Everything should work, but just to be safe, make sure you make note of all changes you do to your pc and jot down all the folders you accessed and changed so that you can undo changes. HTH. kgeissler 0 Posted June 12, 2001 Can't you have personal folder on a network share somewhere? Then just open the PST file no matter where you are on the network? Share this post Link to post
Allanv 0 Posted June 15, 2001 u need outlook 2000 for this; and have the disk for office 2000 handy as well, but first you need to set up a post office on yer network. when this is done open outlook and find the folders you want to share with the other pc's right click and say SHARE this folder, "it might ask you to insert cd at this time" then it will ask you "who with" and up pops a box with the post office contacts init, then it will ask you what mode you want to share "say author mode" this will allow you to send updates of the folders to each machine that you share with "EG if you use a contact list in outlook and on pc1 you add a contact then pc2 will recieve that contact in 10 mins" this time can be reduces of course or forced by both machines pressing F5. one you have sent the share request the other pc you sent it to must accept the request for it to work, now if the second pc isnt on at this time dont worry it will get the request next time it boots up for all this requires you to be using MS mail as an internal mail system and any machine running win95 and above can achieve this. this removes the need for MS exchange server and will work on as many machines you have on the network MS mail is in the control panel maked mail add MS mail/ /exit then back to contol panel administer a post office and setup the users hey presto MS gets less money.. if you need more help then email me or icq 14159453 i have this in word docs i can send you hope tyhis is what you want it works for me and my company....i can share calander / contacts / any folder i choose Allanv Share this post Link to post
lager_brains 0 Posted June 15, 2001 AllanV, This sounds promising, but I cannot find MS mail under Mail in Control Panel (Mail = "Outlook Mail Profiles")? BTW, I do have Office 2000. Jez Share this post Link to post
