win2000 setup.. blue screens me

Recommended Posts

Hi

whenever i doa win2000 setup or installtion... it boots to dos after exiting form win98se.. when it starts inspecting my computer hardware... when it says.. loading win2000 it just blue screens saying check hard drives etc... but theres nothing wrong with them..

when i had win2k on here lasttime.. it thoguht the quantum fireball hdd was a SCSI device..when it is infact a IDE device.. i unplugged that one incase it might have been that one causing the setup error but it aint..

i also have a DXR3 decoder card would that be a prob? but then again if its saying check hdd's it has to be a prob with hdd's? but there is no prob ;(

Are you installing a dual-boot system, or upgrading from Win98?

If you're upgrading, it is much better to do a clean install - boot from the CD rather than upgrade from Win98. I haven't heard a single good story from anyone who has upgraded rather than clean installed...

Note that if you have any hard drives linked to SCSI or ATA66/100 controllers, you will need to get the drivers for those and stick them on a floppy - when the Win2k install program starts, press F6 and you will need to load the drivers a little later in the setup routine (it's a bit confusing that your F6 keypress isn't acknowledged until 5 minutes into setup!!)

Hope this helps,

AndyF

Okay, I'm assuming that you're using the onboard Promise IDE controllers, right? Copy the whole contents of the Promise IDE folder onto a clean floppy, and then you hit F6 right off the bat when Win2k starts its setup and feed it the drivers when requested. smile
