HELLBRINGER 0 Posted July 4, 2001 I just noticed an extra light on on my switch. Oberving the cable, lead to my friends computer. NOT TURNED ON! I checked! And the LED was still on on the switch. But I did not install the WOL cable from the NIC to the MB. How/Why is it doing this? Share this post Link to post
Uykucu 0 Posted July 5, 2001 What do you mean? It might sound stupid but could it be power??? Share this post Link to post
HELLBRINGER 0 Posted July 5, 2001 I said the system is not on. How does the light go on just cause the cable is in? That doesnt make sense to me cause from what I know only the LED will be on (on the switch, not the NIC itself) if the WOL cable plugged into the motherboard. Is there some other feature I don't know about? Share this post Link to post
Uykucu 0 Posted July 5, 2001 Yes but as you now machines always powered on. The light might be stating cable is in and voltage is present on the cable, So WoL is active whatever it might actually be active or not. Of course I am just guessing but I have seen this on Intel, 3Com and HP's Share this post Link to post
HELLBRINGER 0 Posted July 5, 2001 What? That first sentense made no sense! Well I dont know what the deal is here. It has never done this before. Share this post Link to post
Uykucu 0 Posted July 5, 2001 Well, what i have intended to say was. As you already know the machines (PC's Switches etc.) today are always on. Sorry for the confusion. Are you sure it has never done this before. That Led is basically just a voltage detector there is nothing magical or electronic about it. If there is a voltage (potential diffrence) between two nodes (pins) it generates a current on a pre specified direction and lights. BTW a LED is just a Diode Share this post Link to post
HELLBRINGER 0 Posted July 6, 2001 Well yeah... But my other PCs don't do that. And none have the WOL cable on. Which is VERY wierd. And Yes I am sure. And I also know how a LED works, a LED is a light emitting diode. Just doesn't make sense how it is on if the PC is not on. Maybe there is something I have overlooked. But I was just curious, this isn't a serious issue. Nor needs technical support lol. Share this post Link to post
HELLBRINGER 0 Posted July 6, 2001 LOL... Very abrubt and crude, but effective. Conversation over. I'm still curious though. LOL Share this post Link to post
Uykucu 0 Posted July 6, 2001 You know what they say, curiosity kills the cat! We also have a saying in turkey, which roughly translates as. Whatever misforune you've got it is caused either by curiosity or your dick! Verry ***ist, verry crude but got my point. Kind regards, looking forward to the next thread. Share this post Link to post
bimmerm3m5 0 Posted June 11, 2002 Your friends motherboard and NIC card both support PCI 2.2. This standard allows for Wake On Lan to work without the physical cable. Share this post Link to post
bytemangler 0 Posted June 11, 2002 I have run into something similiar with out Linksys switch at work. Sometime after unpluging the CAT5 cable from the port the link light indicator still on. Reseting it (off/on) seemed to have fix the glitch. Share this post Link to post
bimmerm3m5 0 Posted June 12, 2002 It's not a glitch, it means WOL is possible. Share this post Link to post
Uykucu 0 Posted June 12, 2002 Hey guys we have settled this about a year ago or so with deciding to screw the LED's. What is the big deal anyway. BTW you are correct bimmerm3m5. It is because board keeps the NIC powered up in case of a wake up signal so the led stays on without activity. If APM or ACPI to set to monitor the signals etc. you know the rest. There is a ghost in my machine, it turns itself on suddenly!!! Spooky! Share this post Link to post
