Bit of a weird one.....

On one of my hard drives, I have this Document and Settings directory, which is not used.

 

However, I am unable to delete it. Its not used for anything, as it was from a previous XP installation.

 

I can't delete it in Win2k or in WinXP.

 

I don't want to reformat the hard drive as I have too much on it. Scandisk doesn't report any errors either.

 

This is the message I get:

 

"Cannot remove folder NetworkService.NT Authority.002: Access is denied. The source file may be in use"

 

Logged in as Administrator, and I know that Win2k doesn't look to that directory, and neither does WinXP.

 

So, I am in need of help on this one...

Using NTFS? Check the security settings if you are.

Its useless right? Cant you delete it in DOS?

 

Also isnt there a way to turn off "Windows File Protection"? Then you could delete the folder I think... I forget how to do it. Maybe you have to have a file or something.

I'd use good ol' DOS for the easiest fix

Well, yes I'm using NTFS on this drive. Just checked the security settings, and they allow me total access to the directory. However, trying to enter any of the subdirectories results in the same response.

 

DOS bootdisk, nice idea, but can't read NTFS partitions. (Already tried that one a long long time ago.)

Sorry... Don't know if you saw... Can this be disabled? I think that folder may be protected! See if you can disable WFP temporarily and delete the folder then. Try that.
