Default Service Listing for XP RC1

Recommended Posts

Hi

I was experiencing some network slowness on my home network, one machine with XP RC1/WinME dual-boot, the other computer runs just ME. I decided to play around with some of the Services in XP, and now I can't connect to the internet at all. I tried playing around a bit more and think I screwed some other settings up.

Does anyone know of a website that lists all Windows XP services and waht they do? Or if someone has/could make a list of the default settings for XP Services?

I had already disabled System Restore, so I can't go back and restore the settings.

Thanks

2 things 1st NEVER disable a service, set it to manual unless you KNOW you won't need it.

2nd here is a list of services you can disable in 2k safely a lot of these are in XP so if something isnt in the list re-enable it and it should fix your problem. As for what services do what most of them say in the properties box of the service

Services:

Alerter

Com+

Diskeeper (if not running, no point in enabling it)

Application Management

Clipbook

Computer Browser

Distributed Link Client

Distributed Transaction Coordinator

Fax Service (if not faxing, why run it? Spooler must be running also to use Fax programs that open the port it's tuned to like a printer printing to a file!)

Indexing Service

Internet Connection Sharing

Logical Disk Manager

Administrative Service

Messenger Net Logon

NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing Service

Network DDE

Network DDE DSDM

NT LM Security Support Provider

Performance Logs & Alerts

Print Spooler (unless printing or faxing)

QoS RSVP Service

Remote Access Auto Connection Manager (I use cablemodem is why...)

Remote Access Connection Manager (I use cablemodem is why...)

Remote Procedure call RPC Locator

Remote Registry Service (LOL, obvious! Security)

Routing & Remote Access (not doing RAS)

Server

SmartCard

SmartCardHelper

System Event Notification Service

Task Scheduler (not running any batch processes)

Telnet (gee, wonder why?? Security!)

Uninterruptible Power Supply (dont use one now... battery died!)

Utility Manager

Windows Installer

Windows Time

Thanks so much for your help. I went through and set everything I disabled to Manual. After rebooting, I still was unable to connect to the internet. I then started the Messenger service, and all of the sudden I had an internet connection. And now the stupid Messenger icon is back in my system tray. Not great, but better than no internet at all.

Thanks
