TheDragon 0 Posted July 26, 2001 The current version of Partition magic that I own will not run unless its under windows 2000 (I had it installed on 2k before I upgraded and now have it installed in XP). I ran it in compatibility mode and made the neccesary changes to the partitions, which requires a restart. Upon restart, Xp gives me an error message that a program is missing (which was called by Partition magic pro, something _mount) and then continues to boot up. No partition changes have been made when I get back into windows. Partition magic pro obviously needs some utility that it calls on startup when making the partition changes that only windows 2000 has present. I do not want to compromise the integrity of my hard drive/xp installation by forcing partition magic to work under tricky conditions. I was wondering if anyone has gotten it to work reliably, or if there is another solution for XP partitioning users =) I currently have a few linux partitions on my hard drive I would like to nuke, as well as my main windows partition with all its data on it. I want to kill the linux partitions (so something has to recognize what they are and be able to delete them) and then resize my main partition without losing the data, which is what partition magic used to be able to do. If anyone could provide help on this, I would appreciate it. Share this post Link to post
AndyFair 0 Posted July 26, 2001 It's probably because Partitions Magic is not a native XP application - PowerQuest don't have any versions of Partition Magic that can run on XP (yet), and I certainly wouldn't recommend using it in compatibility mode. If you still have Win2k installed (dual boot), I recommend that you make the partition changes in 2k - it's much safer!! Otherwise, you could delete the Linux partitions using fdisk (I think it lists the ext2 partitions as "unknown"?), but that won't help you with expanding the XP partition into the empty space. Of course, you could always have 2 or 3 partitions instead of one big one - one for windows, one for data and one for games (or whatever). AndyF Share this post Link to post
Vampyr 0 Posted July 26, 2001 The built in Diskmanager for WinXP will delete those Linux partitions. I had the same problem. What version of PQ Magic Pro are you using? I had the latest Pro Version and had no problems as long as I didn't have any NTFS drives. Share this post Link to post
fatattack 0 Posted August 1, 2001 the chances that Partition magic will run on xp are slim since NTFS was changed a little so Partition magic will not be able to work with them Share this post Link to post
