I installed mandrake 9.2 and when asked for the nic card info I chose the "ne" module because it said NE2000 compatible. the automatic install failed and then I was asked to fill in 3 boxes. I filled them in to the best of my ability using the Windows info for the Nic card, the IRQ and the IO information. But it still doesn't work. The card is a cheapie someone gave me a long time ago but it works fine in Windows. How do I get this driver information in there???? (I have another problem because cd2 of mandrake 9.2 never installed so all I have is KDE which apparenlty won't le tme change my network settings) margaret Share this post Link to post
danleff 0 Posted February 25, 2004 The easiest solution would be to go into windows and write down what the device manager states that the card is. Then post the result back here. This way we can help you find the correct designation. Share this post Link to post
Dapper Dan 0 Posted February 25, 2004 On the cd2 thing, you can still install packages from it and all the others using urpmi. Let's say you wanted to install gaim. At the command line as root, go.. urpmi gaim [enter] And it will install gaim by asking for some of the cd's you have. mrobins3 0 Posted February 26, 2004 I will post that nic info later. The problem with using the Mandrake Control Center is that I don't have that, it is one of the things that never got installed. All I have is KDE. That is what automatically starts up and I don't see any way to get out of it other than to log out. I tried logging in as root but that didn't help either. I'm getting readyto give up on this as previously I considered myself a pretty skilled computer user but all of this is just way over my head. I paid $50 for the CD distribution from Mandrake and their support is basically nonexistent unless I want to pay another $50 for a phone incident. They don't answer my posts on "Mandrakeexpert.com." for days... thanks for trying to help Share this post Link to post

You log in to get the gui (desktop environment) and logout to exit it. What options for programs do you have? Are there icons for e-mail, Konqueror and others on the control panel on the bottom? They don't answer my posts on "Mandrakeexpert.com." for days... mrobins3, I've been reading the posts here for a while, and you cannot imagine how many we see from new users wanting help with Mdk 9.2. There are a lot! I used to use Mdk 9.0 and when I tried 9.1 and 9.2, I ran into so many problems I switched to Red Hat 9.0. If you don't have the Mdk Control Center installed, does urpmi work? It may be worth considering to just do a re-install. Heck, between Mdk 8.2 and 9.0, I bet I re-installed 8 or 10 times before I felt I got it right! You may also want to consider trying a different distro. I presently am very impressed with Fedora Core 1 which you can download off the internet without charge. The Fedora community seems to be far better at addressing new users questions than was my experience, (which was exactly like yours!) with Mdk. Which ever distro you go with, it is always wise to install everything if you have the space. Don't give up!! This is all new and different and intimi[censored] but if I can learn Linux anyone can! Stay with it! Anything worthwhile takes patience. There are obstacles to overcome when migrating to Linux but in the end I gaurantee you will find that it is worth it! Share this post Link to post
mrobins3 0 Posted February 27, 2004 the computer connects to the internet through a local network in our house that has (now) a total of 5 computers on it (scary...).... the internet connection is a cable modem down in the basement with a router and all the computers connected to it. The connections are yes, I believe, Cat5. The card and internet connection work fine in windows. I appreciate any help you can give me. thanks! (a side issue is I'm really confused because people keep telling me to start up the Mandrake Control Center. I click on the little thing in the corner where the start button would be on a windows screen, and go through those menus and all I get is KDE choices, no Mandrake control center...
