HELLBRINGER 0 Posted August 1, 2001 there are some files i want to encrypt with a password so that only a person that knows the password can open the file... delete it, etc... how do I do that? can I encrypt folders? Share this post Link to post
clutch 1 Posted August 1, 2001 http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q230/5/20.ASP That should do it. Make sure you are using NTFS first though. Share this post Link to post
HELLBRINGER 0 Posted August 1, 2001 Bahh! If you copy it to a non NTFS it is decrypted! Well that's lamo... Screw that... Are there any programs I can buy or download off the net that will encrypt something and password it? Share this post Link to post
CUViper 0 Posted August 1, 2001 you can put a password on a zip file, but there are programs that can crack that, so it's not totally secure... Share this post Link to post
clutch 1 Posted August 1, 2001 I only deal with NTFS, so it's never been an issue for me. And CUViper is right about Zip files, they are pretty easy to crack. If I see anything else, I'll post it. Share this post Link to post
brainsoft 0 Posted August 2, 2001 The only zip crackers I've been able to find are brute for and dictionary cracks, there isn't a way to simple extract the password or anything. Try WinRAR, rar files are more secure, stable, and compressed than zips. Share this post Link to post
Jeff123df2 0 Posted August 9, 2001 i was just curious what level of encryption does efs encrypt your files/folders? Share this post Link to post
ryoko 0 Posted August 11, 2001 I use pgp. It does what you want, however if you want a comercial product there are many out there. Don't go with password protected archives. They can be cracked too easily. Even brute force attacks will take surprisingly little time to break through. Share this post Link to post
HELLBRINGER 0 Posted August 12, 2001 I got PGB or what ever... it's secure... but a PAIN IN THE *** to use... I just want to encrypt my files but have them appear in normal form in explorer.... for instance i doublclick an encryped MS word file and when it opens it says something like "this file is encryped, insert your password to decrypt it"... Something simple, and easy... Share this post Link to post
