Network card has a shaky connection

Recommended Posts

Win2k Pro SP2

AGP slot: GF2 GTS

PCI #1: empty

PCI #2: empty

PCI #3: SB Live (3300a drivers)

PCI #4: Linksys HPNA 2.0 adapter

PCI #5: Linksys 10/100 NIC

HPNA = home phoneline networking. 10mbps over the two unused copper pairs of traditional phone wiring. I've got my family's computer running Win98 downstairs with ICS through a dialup modem. It works well except after extended use, my HPNA NIC loses the connection for a second - it says "Network cable unplugged" near the tray for a couple of seconds, and then it gets the connection back. Usually it can recover, sometimes it doesn't.

If I turn the 98 machine off, it says cable unplugged as well, since it's a peer to peer network. Is it something with the PCI latency on this computer, or just 98 fubar'ing up?

Can't promise that this solves your problem with HPNA but this worked for me:

The occasional but extremely annoying "network cable unplugged" blip was caused by the NIC:s auto determination of the Networks speed (10/100). After going into the Device Manager / properties and changing the speed setting from Auto to a fixed value (100) the balloons popped for good. If you have a slower LAN set the speed lower. You have to do this on all NICs.

to releive your self from many headaches, you may wanna give 3COM a try. They make excellent network cards. I have never had any problems with them. Check it out!!!

Good luck :-)
