RedStar 0 Posted August 23, 2001 I can't get this game to work in win2k - so i found this site. The link here went to a guy who had 9 steps to make it work. i followed them...but the patch was 4.50 instead of 4.4. when i try to play the game..i'm told the files are corrupt and i must install. but then i noticed dosfreak's post where he said just install the game and then use MS's little fix program. I can't remember for sure..but i don't remember the install program working. I'm confused...which is the best way to get this game to work? alternatively...if i am networked to a win98 platform (ppro200) can i just run the game from my win2k platform? If so, will it be as fast as 98 platform or my amd 1.33 win2k platform? TIA Share this post Link to post
RedStar 0 Posted August 23, 2001 I download application compatibility toolkit for win2k (qappfix.exe in it) but i also see reference to appupd.exe (what is this?) and..Application Compatibility Program (Apcompat.exe) This program is designed to overcome the most common causes of application incompatibility with Windows 2000. You can use this tool with a Windows interface by running the Application Compatibility program, or you can run this program as a command-line tool. plus i have installed MS's monthly compatibility games update. I also have the compatibility tools installed so that i see compatibility tab on short cuts. This is confusing...are all these different, or are some earlier obsolete things, or........ I'm helplessly confused now after all my reading...and all because a few companies will not release a few tweaks to make their games win2k compatible Share this post Link to post
pmistry 0 Posted August 24, 2001 but honestly, just forget it, high stakes is the absolute worst game to get running under Windows 2000, even if you do manage to get it going you will run into more problems later with corrup install files , etc, happened to me more than once. EA sucks with support for their games. If high stakes would work under Windows 2000 i would have no need for a dual boot, but I also can't get NFS:PU working either, swap file and gimme.dll tricks.......... already tried those Here is one method that let me run the game 2 times before corrupt installation files, install it under Windows 9x/Me then export the registry to Win2k and run it. RedStar 0 Posted August 24, 2001 Thanks for the response. I will do as you suggest and waste no more time on this. I am quite happy that MW3 and myth 2 are working great right under win2k native. (first time i tried both these games i had problems...yet, the second time was smooth sailing). PS. If your half life is crashing for no reason...try it in console mode without lan support for single player mode. Sierra people are great at supporting their products --regardless of OS. make a shortcut and put this in target: C:\SIERRA\HalfLife\hl.exe -console -nomaster +sv_lan 1 Share this post Link to post
pmistry 0 Posted August 29, 2001 After I upgraded a Windows ME install with High Stakes already installed, the game still runs inside Windows 2000! Yea! Finally after trying every damn solution around. Running Windows 2000 Professional with no Service Pack installed. I also disable my Internet connection while playing. Share this post Link to post
RedStar 0 Posted August 29, 2001 heh, its not like i want to cut off my right leg and buy windows me and reinstall win2k without service packs = ) And with no internet connection..how do you play it online? Regardless, I am glad that you can run it!! Sure is a great looking/driving game. I did not quite get my monies worth because, after upgrading my savage 4 card on 98, it ran dirt slow and became unplayable. any1 want to buy my copy of Nd4SPD: HS --its still got the original racing tires and less than 5k miles under the hood. pmistry 0 Posted August 29, 2001 I just noticed that when i ran NFS4 it was without my net connection. I reenabled my Cable connection and ran NFS 4 and it worked without a hitch. Online play works. Although, I am hesitant to install SP1 or SP2, quite frankly I don't need them anyway. My system is stable as hell. This is the first time I have went from Win98 > WinME > Win2000, all upgrades too. I am just waiting for XP, I'll do a clean install then. I also get NFS 5 to work as well. I think you gotta install NFS 5 before SP2 or it won't work. Share this post Link to post
