DVD drive sucks life out of machine

Help!

 

Whenever I leave a DVD in the drive (Lite-On), the system bogs down.

 

It seems to relate to the disk spinning up, yet I am not using the drive.

 

Task Manager does not show anything out of the ordinary.

 

900MHz T-Bird, 384MB, Win2k, Lite-on 6x DVD, Lite-on CDRW
