Cummulating virtual COM ports!!!

Recommended Posts

I only have one physical COM port (Serial Port), though as you know when you have comunication devices such as PCI modems, they are assigned a COM port number.

I am now up to number 10, though i only have one PCI slot modem.

The reason for this is i have dual boot with Win98, when i hibernate with Win2K and boot Win98, then return to Win2K the modem does not respond and after a reboot the port cannot be opened.

So i have to reinstall the modem drivers ect...

Though every time i reinstall the modem it is allocted a higher COM port number. The other COM ports are labelled "(in use)"

Naturally COM port #1 is "(in use)" because it is assigned to the serial port.

So i am asking how can i clear up the other COM Portsconfused

Suggestions Appreciated:p

Below is a step by step approach of what i'm talking about:

Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> System Tools -> Device Manager -> Modems -> "Select Your Modem" -> 'right click' Properties -> Advanced -> Advanced Port Settings

Now you'll see buffers ect... + "COM PORT NUMBER"

My Modem is at #10

Every number up to 10 has the dialogue (in use) next to them.

The problem is: I Have no other Communication devices

Please if anyone knows how to clear this up it would be much appreciated.

Cheers.

Well I haven't experienced this problem but:

Your modem does not use your on-board serial ports. So ANY COM port that is being used by your Modem is just that...your Modem. Having nothing to do with your motherboard. I would try deleting all COM ports and uninstalling your modem. Then try either reinstalling your modem or rebooting but anyways it shouldn't matter.
