Uninstalling XP from dual boot system

Ok all.....don't know if i done this the right way but i just reformated the 2nd harddrive that xp was on.

 

Now as you all know on dual boot systems you get a choice of what OS you want to start on bootup.

 

The problem is i'm still getting this choice upon bootup and i wish to get rid of it as xp is not installed anymore.

 

I'm guessing that its a registry thing......can anybody help?

 

BTW.......i'm on WinME(previously WinME+XP Dual boot)

Its actually a bootstrap thing! When you dual boot, several NT bootstrap files are placed on your hd (ntldr.exe, boot.ini etc). This removes the dos boot you once had with ME. You can set the default boot "default=C:\" in the BOOT.INI file to be C:\ with a timeout of 0 and it will boot into WinME. Remove any listing in the [operating systems] section that refer to the XP partition and leave the line beginning with C:\.

 

Now you can use SYS.EXE from a WinME boot floppy and it will replace the NT BootStrap with a DOS bootstrap (msdos.sys, IO.sys, Command.com). I'm not sure if your system will autoboot into windows afterwards but if it doesn't just add the "WIN" to your autoexec.bat and it will go into windows.

lol/now i'm completely lost......

Ok this is whats happened.

Installed WinME.

Then installed WinXP to another partition(another harddrive)

then i got that menu to choose OS at startup(XP being default)

Them deleated the XP partition

Still have the menu to choose which os at statup(XP now gone)

Since then i've reinstalled WinME over the top of exsiting WinME

Now menu has WinME as default startup.

 

i want to completely get rid of menu so it boots up without the choice.

 

i have no reference or file's called (ntldr.exe, boot.ini)on my harddrive.

 

and this is my autoexec in c:\

 

SET COMSPEC=C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND.COM

SET windir=C:\WINDOWS

SET winbootdir=C:\WINDOWS

SET PATH=C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND

so can someone help me?

If you've got your stuff backed up and have the time, a clean install wouldn't hurt.

 

If the situation were reversed, it's a piece of cake to take care of.

If you have the NT/XP boot menu then you have those files on your HD. They are just hidden. But forget about them....

 

To fix your problem, just boot to a WinME boot floppy and at the a:\ prompt type: SYS C:

 

That will restore your winme boot info the way it was before XP was installed.
