Compatibility w/XP

Recommended Posts

Is anyone using XP with an HP P1100 printer? The compatibility wizard says that it is not compatible with XP. But I know it works with 2000 and I thought that if it worked in 2000 it would work in XP. Could I use the same 2000 drivers and make it work. If anyone has any ideas please send them on through.

Thanks

Win2k compatability doesn't automatically mean WinXP compatability.

There are subtle differences in how the driver model works between the two OS's.

You might be fine, you may find that the Win2k drivers work just fine under WinXP.

However it is just as possible you will find they wont work or even worse, do damage to your WinXP installation.

The big problem here is that we are talking about HP here.

Now I'm sure like me you would have thought a big company like HP would be able to get drivers sorted out prior to a new OS release, at least have them ready on release day.

Unfortunately if the Win2k release is anything to go by, you might be waiting a long time for HP to release those WinXP drivers.

On the release day of Win2k, HP posted a driver release schedule on their web page for proper drivers to use the full function of their range of products.

Some products were slated to have drivers some 6 months after Win2k's release!! (And they stuck to the schedule, 6 months some people had to wait!).

Best bet would be to drop HP an e-mail, they may decide to help you on this one.

Other than that, try the Win2k drivers under a throw-away WinXP installation.

That is an installation you don't mind loosing should the very worse happen and the Win2k drivers cause you a lot of problems under WinXP.

I took a look at the HP website and found that they do support my printer with XP drivers. I guess that I shouldnt believe everything my friends say, or microsoft.

Ah, that's good news.

The Microsoft Compatability list is only updated now and again, not as soon as company's get their fingers out and get some drivers written.

Good possability that HP have written drivers since the compatability list was last updated.

Of course it's also possible MS were not happy with the HP drivers and set the status as 'Not Supported' as the drivers are not up to MS's quality control levels.

Pleased you're going to see some support though.
