jdmba 0 Posted September 26, 2001 Greets, I have been reading of all the similar problems in the forum threads, but I cannot find anyone who has had the problem and solved it. If you have had the problem and solved it, PLEASE reply. Here's the situation (which, again, seems common). A '98SE machine and an XP machine are sharing the same Linksys BEFSR41 router. The SE machine (mine) can check files on the XP machine (which has file sharing turned on) in a microsecond. No issues on a 100MBS network. HOWEVER, when the XP machine (my fiancee's) tries to access the 98SE machine (which is where all the files are kept), there is a SIGNIFICANT delay in accessing the files. The delay is so long, in fact, that Microsoft Word will time out as "Not Responding" on a File->Open from the system. It will eventually work just fine, but after the dramatic lag. [To avoid one issue which might come up in answers, please note that both machines can access each other, in time. It is not that the cards are not in, the plugs are not in, the files are not shared, etc. - it works, the problem is a very very long delay] Any ideas? [Edited P.S. Please do not refer me to existing articles. The existing forum articles, which I have read, deal with logging into an XP server. I am not doing that. I am just sharing files on both computers. Those solutions do not apply] Share this post Link to post
jdmba 0 Posted September 27, 2001 That did not work. I think the problem is more severe than that, but it is common. But you are coorect that my problem, unlike many others posed, is that the WindowsXP machine takes a lot of time to access the Windows '98SE files (but no delay in reverse). Any other ideas? jdmba 0 Posted September 27, 2001 Yes, I did the hack - I will need to check on the TCPIP over NetBios thing ... but I cannot do that until tomorrow. If you can post a bit more info (i.e., If this, then that), in lieu of my answering that question, it would be wonderful. Share this post Link to post
jdmba 0 Posted October 1, 2001 AlexStaar, I have reviewed all 7348793 pages of the other thread (where you were diagnosing the XP/ME issue). I have followed a number of steps and the delay is not gone. I may need some more help. Please consider the following information, which is different from that set: 1) I can ping each machine with no issue (the XP and the 98), they are xxx.xxx.xxx.100 (98) and xxx.xxx.xxx.101 (XP). I assume these are set by the BEFSR41 Linksys Router 2) My Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP on the 98 machine is grayed out. 3) I have done your registry hack on the XP machine, but the XP machine still takes a very long time to see the 98 machine (the 98 machine is instant, and the pings were instant). 4) MY XP FIREWALL WAS NEVER ON. NOT BEFORE THESE HELPFUL POSTS AND NOT NOW. jdmba 0 Posted October 1, 2001 APK, I guess you popped into my message before I had edited it to include the XP info ... if you look back, it is there as well, in one post. To answer your questions: 1) NetBIOS over TCPIP is running on the XP box. 2) I don't have 2 network cards in the 98 box, I have no idea why it is showing 2. 3) I cannot figure out how to get the NETBIOS over TCPIP un-grayed 4) Yes, Client for Microsoft Networks is, and has been, installed on the 98 box. 5) Yes, I am Roadrunner thru AT&T Mediaone Is there anything else I can post .... HELP??? Share this post Link to post
jdmba 0 Posted October 1, 2001 APK, Thanks for your help. I hope someone who knows '98 can chime in here. I have only 1 NIC, but if you look, one says ppp and the other says the linksys. I don't know, though. It's odd because the box you want to change is NOT the box having trouble (I mean, i guess it is, but it has no symptoms). I have only one NIC card in my Windows->System. The computer shows only one nic card. Aaargh. Share this post Link to post
jdmba 0 Posted October 4, 2001 One of the users actually did solve the problem! Check out this thread: http://www.ntcompatible.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&postid=79031&t=611#post79031 The secret is that you cannot have a password set up on the 98 box for the share. It must be blank. Then delete the stored password on the XP box under Control Panel -> Users -> (Select the user) -> Manage Network Passwords -> [DELETE] Yay! Share this post Link to post
