shassouneh 0 Posted September 27, 2001 Hi everyone, I have problems getting a Windows Me machine to connect to my windows Xp machine through a simple LAN. There are NO DOMAINS or anything funky like that. The machine refuses to connect to my workgroup! For some reason it thinks the workgroup is "not available" even though my windowsXp machine connects to his machine effortlessly! HELP! thanx. PS: I'm running my NETBOS over TCP/IP as clutch has suggested! Share this post Link to post
shassouneh 0 Posted September 29, 2001 I tried all of that already, none of it helped! :-( thanx for the reply though. :-) Share this post Link to post
shassouneh 0 Posted September 29, 2001 Yes, it pings just fine. results shown below: C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>ping -a 127.0.0.1 Pinging localhost [127.0.0.1] with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128 Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128 Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128 Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128 Ping statistics for 127.0.0.1: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms Share this post Link to post
shassouneh 0 Posted September 29, 2001 Please bear with me here. I am no networking expert. The workgroup's name is pearljamrox btw. Share this post Link to post
shassouneh 0 Posted September 29, 2001 Oddly enough: A.) NETBIOS IS enabled over TCP/IP B.) My computer is configured to use DHCP/dynamic IPs, so it must be the college ISP! (I'm in a college dorm LAN). Share this post Link to post
shassouneh 0 Posted September 29, 2001 Ok, I'll do that. I just un-installed all protocols/service except TCP/IP and i gotta restart before I can re-install them. I thought maybe If i re-build my network connection it may help or something! I'll try it as soon as i restart. I'l let you know of what happens! Share this post Link to post
shassouneh 0 Posted September 29, 2001 This is messed up! Now it makes no mention of the status of NetBios over TCP/IP! This is what ipconfig /all returns: Windows IP Configuration Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : fallasteeni Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . : Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Unknown IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Description . . . . . . . . . . . : 3Com EtherLink III ISAPNP Ethernet A dapter (Generic 3C509b) Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-60-97-3B-7C-2D Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.10.4.116 Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.0.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 10.10.0.1 DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.10.0.2 DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 204.70.127.127 Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : Wednesday, September 28, 2011 9:19:2 7 PM Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : Thursday, September 29, 2011 9:19:27 AM HEEEELP! shassouneh 0 Posted September 29, 2001 Yes, File and Printer sharng IS installed, and so is the client. Also, the Ping DOES work. The XP machine can see all other machines, but not vice versa! Share this post Link to post
shassouneh 0 Posted September 29, 2001 OOOOKay, even more problems! Now the Me machine can see the XP machine but not the other wa around! Also, when playing an Mp3 file from the Xp machine, at some point the player suffers and hangs, causing the me system to almost crash!!!! HEEEELP! Also, browsing the netwrok takes FOREVER on the XP machine. Share this post Link to post
shassouneh 0 Posted September 29, 2001 Unfortunately I can't do that. I am browsing a college network consisting of multiple workgroups. The best I can really do is get information from my machine, and one other windows Me machine (the troublesome one) since it's my room mate's! So, the two machines on the "pearljamrox" workgroup are "kosher" so to speak. lol By the way, the XP machine can now "see" the other machine, but if it attempts to connect ot it it returns an error message saying i do not have persmission or the "server hasn't been started"! I'm just as pissed at you and i need a good night's sleep which i can't have if this problem doesn't get fixed! Share this post Link to post
shassouneh 0 Posted September 29, 2001 No no no! you got me allwrong. "kosher" was a figure of speech. What i CAN do is get you the ipconfig /all on both machines that are under the "pearljamrox" WORKGROUP. Is that ok? Oh by the way, so you have MSN/AOL/ICQ/Y! etc... this is getting intoa conversation, so it'll be better if we can send IMs, don't you think? Share this post Link to post
shassouneh 0 Posted September 29, 2001 Here is all the data i can "legally" get (lol): Windows XP machine: this is what ipconfig /all returns: C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>ipconfig /all Windows IP Configuration Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : fallasteeni Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . : Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Unknown IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Description . . . . . . . . . . . : 3Com EtherLink III ISAPNP Ethernet A dapter (Generic 3C509b) Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-60-97-3B-7C-2D Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.10.4.116 Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.0.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 10.10.0.1 DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.10.0.2 DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 204.70.127.127 Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : Wednesday, September 28, 2011 9:19:2 7 PM Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : Thursday, September 29, 2011 9:19:27 AM Windows Me: this is what winipcfg returns: IP Address: 10.10.1.173 Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0 Default gateway: 10.10.0.1 Adapter Address: 00-50-8B-AC-E3-3B Share this post Link to post

shassouneh 0 Posted September 29, 2001 Quote: Change it to "Use NetBIOS setting from DHCP Server" instead of "Enable NetBIOS over Tcp/IP"... on BOTH machines! AND, tick off the "Enable LMHOSTS lookup" checkbox too! How do you do this in Windows Me? I've already done it in XP. I looked under TCP/Ip settings and they don't seem to have such an option there Share this post Link to post
shassouneh 0 Posted September 29, 2001 I'm not sure how to actually drop the XP firewall. bear with me here! lol! Share this post Link to post
clutch 1 Posted September 29, 2001 Why would you have someone disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP? That doesn't make any sense, as I thought he was looking for NetBIOS name resolutions, and he doesn't have an NT server hosting DHCP or WINS. Share this post Link to post

shassouneh 0 Posted September 29, 2001 Dear Clutch and AleecStar, Especially AleecStar. Thank you soooo mcuh for helping me! I owe you PLENTY! It was that d%^$%&^^% firewall. shassouneh 0 Posted September 29, 2001 hmm, we got another problem here! When playing an Mp3 file from the Xp machine (directly from the network, NOT copying it first), the file gets stuck at some point. Different files get stuck at different places. Any ideas/tips/hints/solutions ANYONE? Share this post Link to post
shassouneh 0 Posted September 29, 2001 Yes we certainly did, but please read my previous post! There's that small issue that needs to be fixed! It really bugs me! of coarse I can work around it by copying files first, but the beuty of a LAN network is "preview" before you decide to copy, and i really REALLY want to be able to just play those mp3s right off the network! Any ideas as to how i can solve this problem? Share this post Link to post
