RhinoTrip 0 Posted October 2, 2001 Finally I figured out what the problem with slow shared file network access is between XP and Win98 / ME computers - It's a new microsoft service/ protocol called WMI. If you don't have WMI enabled, getting file lists from remote computers will take FOREVER. So, how to enable it? Quite simple, just type this in the run box: wmiprvse Voila! If you want to put it in your start-up folder (a good idea if you ask me) then just point a shortcut to wmiprvse.exe ; I hope this works for everyone - RT Share this post Link to post
Cynan 0 Posted October 2, 2001 How about just setting it to autostart in the Services control panel applet? a much neater way. --Cynan. Share this post Link to post
RhinoTrip 0 Posted October 2, 2001 Because it's not in the services control panel - RT Share this post Link to post

jdmba 0 Posted October 2, 2001 After reviewing and receiving tons of messages on this topic, I was planning on refomatting the XP system back to 98SE because this delay situation is far too problematic. I CANNOT wait to get home and try this. Share this post Link to post

RhinoTrip 0 Posted October 3, 2001 hmm... wierd. Ah well, maybe it will work for someone. Maybe you should try logging into the computer as the administrator at least once - RT Share this post Link to post
jdmba 0 Posted October 4, 2001 One of the users actually did solve the problem! Check out this thread: http://www.ntcompatible.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&postid=79031&t=611#post79031 The secret is that you cannot have a password set up on the 98 box for the share. It must be blank. Then delete the stored password on the XP box under Control Panel -> Users -> (Select the user) -> Manage Network Passwords -> [DELETE] Yay! Share this post Link to post
RhinoTrip 0 Posted October 4, 2001 Huh, I never had that problem at all, and was still getting the slower connections. - RT Share this post Link to post
