FadedTimes 0 Posted October 14, 2001 I've seen other peoples systems do the same thing, dropping anywhere from 256k to 8mb (usually caused by on board video, etc.), but I know the answer won't change your life, 548k is nothing. Share this post Link to post
pmistry 0 Posted October 14, 2001 for Windows 9x, the 511 MB readout in Device Manager is caused by loading stuff into your config.sys or autoexec.bat, mostly DOS TSRS and other programs some of these could be mscdex.exe, mouse.com, smartdrv, emm368, etc...... Especially EMM386.EXE, if you don't need EMM386 which I am sure is the case eliminate it. An ideal config.sys would be either blank or jus devicehigh=c:\windows\himem.sys dos=high, umb for the autoexec, leave it blank too, if you don't want it. i usually stick these lines in set tmp=c:\temp set temp=c:\temp then all of the temp files dump into the c:\temp folder and not the c:\windows\temp folder, the same in Win2k just edit the Control Panel > system > advanced > environment and change your administrator temp variables or [whatever user] plus system temp variables. for my system under Windows 2000 i get 523,744 KB available for Windows. The other bits of memory are being used for startup devices that are essential for Windows to run and thus won't appear as usable memory. do not worry you still have 512 MB.
