stpatrick44 0 Posted October 15, 2001 I somehow got a virus, and it comverted all *.jpg files into *.vbs files. Even new Jpeg files I put on my comp are also converted automatically. Is there any way to get them back to jpegs? I tried just renaming the extension, but that didn't work. Any help at all is appreciated. Thanks. Share this post Link to post
Brian Frank 0 Posted October 15, 2001 Try going to either McAfee or Norton Antivirus (Symantec) sites and run the on-line virus scanner to see what it is at least. If you have a virus scanner installed, you have to keep it updated or it's wasting space on your hard drive. Share this post Link to post
BladeRunner 0 Posted October 15, 2001 Hello, I'm afraid it's time for somebody to give you the bad news. All of the files that have had the tail .vbs added are now lost. This is the Melissa virus or a variation. The reason I know is because we had two laptop's here at work hit with the very same virus. Any up to date virus checker will be able to detect and clean the virus, however the best it can do with your infected files is to place them in quarantine - so that they can't be run and thus re-infect your system. Sorry for the bad news, hopefully you will have most of these infected files backed-up. Share this post Link to post
Uykucu 0 Posted October 21, 2001 First: It is time to get down on your knees and pray for the souls of those files, so their maker may show them mercy. Second: Get an anti virus for f..s sake. i suggest NAV. Mcafee misses a lot no matter what everbody says. If it is melissa variation, with a bit of clever coding you might not be able to use online scan. They block the ports (old stuff) DL a trial version and create some rescue disks on another machine with up to date signature files. I think you know the rest, clean boot, full scan etc. P.S If you are on NTFS, tough! You have to install the AV then update it manually so you can scan etc. Share this post Link to post
