Connection to Internet goes dead

Recommended Posts

Hope someone can help me on this.

I'm using Win 2k. At any unspecific time, my (tcp/ip) connection to the internet goes dead, however the modem remains connected. This happens just at any time, but usually only once or twice a day. It's just business as usual and suddenly, no web pages, no email, nothing. Here's the wierd part, only the other computer (the one that is shared to the internet)works on the internet!!!!!!!!!! So the computer I use to dial to the internet goes dead with internet activity, but the shared one still works! Only a reboot will get the main one going again.

Need help!

Thanks

Gary

Ok, I had this same problem when the internet connection went dead after 20 seconds. What kind of modem do you have? If you have a Lucent 56k based chipset modem you will get this problem on some motherboards and some OSes. Usually Abit motherboards get this problem, especially under newer OSes like Windows Millennium and Windows 2000. Send some specifics, and check out the forums here:

It doesn't sound the same problem as what I am having though. Like I said, my other shared computer still is working on the internet when the host machine (the one that is physically connected) isn't, so obviously it's nothing to do with the modem. Also it's never happened after a short period of time of being on the internet. So far it's been quite a few hours. To me it seems like it might be tied to the tcp/ip protocol. Can anyone think why the tcp/ip protocol might be going dead after a few hours?

Same here, I can connect and 2 minutes later, it goes dead (except I don't have internet sharing) But I have contacted Earthlink over and over, and they keep telling me my TCP/IP is corrupt and to uninstall them and re-install them. BUT, I have done this 10-15 times, even reformatted before, and it STILL does it! NO way they can become corrupt that many times. Any help? I am gonna try a line noise filter, and contact my phone co.

Thanks,

Shamrock

Check out 56k.com for some possible solutions. YOu don't have an Abit motherboard or Lucent modem, so I no of no solutions.
