winxp + sblive: weird problem

Recommended Posts

I'm running Windows XP final, and I have a weird problem:

When I play games which were made for DirectX 8 and up, everything works well.

However, when I play a game that uses DirectX 7 or below, the graphics hang every few seconds, then they're smooth again, then hang... The sound is skipping all the time.

It's not just with DirectX 7 and below, games that do not use DirectX at all, but they use wave files for background music AND sound affects, so when you have a wave file playing in the background as music, and on top of that, when a wave file plays for sound affects, the background wave file starts skipping and sounds really bad...

Finally, anything that uses midi music through MCI hangs the whole system for around 30 seconds while loading the midi... Can't even move the mouse when it's doing that.

I'm just wondering if anyone else is experienceing any of these problems... they're starting to get on my nerves lately.

All my friends don't seem to have this problem, and it's really a bother.

I'm running WinXP 2600, and I have a Sb Live! Value, 3dfx Voodoo 3 w/ TV out, ASUS KT133A motherboard, 512 megs of ram, AMD Athlon 1.2Ghz.

Please, if anyone can help... frown

Hmm... have you the lates drivers for sb live from MS update? And not that I have read all the posts here, but a lot of ppl seem to have a prob with Voodo based gfx cards and XP...If the problem only occurs during gameplay, maby its the gfx card and not the sound card.

I also use a SB Live and that works fine...

Athlon 1200

512 Ram

MSI K7T 266 Pro

Leadtech TNT 2 Ultra (TV OUT)

10/100 Ethernet card

60Gb IBM 60GXP

Pioneer DVD 6x

Yamaha 8x8x24x SCSI

I've tried downloading the new drivers from the Windows Update site, but they refuse to install, so I'm still using the ones that come with windows XP.

I have tried upgrading to the official ones by Creative, but the program devldr32.exe that comes with that, is devldr32.exe version 1.0.0.22 which freezes after about 2 hours or so, and then I have no MIDI playback at all. So I stick with the drivers supplied with Windows XP, and devldr32.exe version 1.0.0.17

My friend has an SB Live! and also an nvida Geforce 3, and he experiences some of the same bugs as myself, especially the MIDI's loading through MCI cause the system to hang for a good few seconds.

I'm out of ideas here

Isn't there an onboard Soundcard on the Motherboard that you are using? If it is, maby you should try that or lend a card from someone to really meke sure that it is the SB Live that is the real issue. I have also heard of ASUS MBs and SB Soundcards maby being a bad match... More that this I cant tell you...

I hope you'll solve it!

Regards Manos

Nope, this board is an ASUS A7V133 + RAID but no onboard sound.

What's been bothering me is everyone else who has a SB Live! doesn't seem to have the problem which I do...

Not sure if this will fix you up or not, but its worth a shot.

1: In BIOS, reserve an IRQ, such as 5--this may not be effective as Win2k and XP ignore the BIOS settings in regard to the IRQ. 2: Try moving the Live! to a different slot.

I do know the Audigy has not given me any trouble yet (haven't had much in hardware problems anyway) with my A7V--not exactly what you've got, but still similar config. I'm not saying go buy a new sound card right now, but just letting ya know that Creative didn't want the Live! troubles to continue.
