Spike 0 Posted November 2, 2001 I am trying to upgrade from win98se to Xp. When I try to install XP I get an Error message during the install "Error: Installation Failed: D:\i386\asms. Error Message: The parameter is incorrect." My System is: Motherboard : Gigabyte Ga-7dxr CPU : AMD 1.4 761/via 686b Ram : 2 Micron 256MB DDR ECC REG PC2100 HD : Maxtor EIDE 20GB UDMA66 VID : 3dfx Voodoo 5500 AGP Sound: Sound blaster live Xgamer CT4760 I removed my Sb card and tried an install and got the same error message so I know it isn't the sb card conflicts that I have read about. I also tried an install from a clean reformatted hd and recieved the same error, so it isn't something in 98se. Anyone seen this before? Share this post Link to post

Bursar 0 Posted November 2, 2001 Is the machine overclocked? I found that XP wouldn't install properly when I was running my 1.2@1.4 When I clocked it back a bit to 1.3 it installed fine. I then clocked it back up to its previous settings and everything runs fine. Share this post Link to post
Palos 0 Posted November 2, 2001 Yes, it could be the processor. I have a TBird @ 1333 MHz, not overclocked, but the heatsink was placed like shite, and it ran at 69 Celsius after 10 minutes. Got plenty of VxD errors, couldn't even install from CD. First I thought it was a RAM problem (primary cause for VxD errors), but then I narrowed it to the heatsink. Share this post Link to post
Spike 0 Posted November 3, 2001 Windows version is Full version XP Professional. The CPU is not overclocked. My CPU temps are around 50-53 Celsius after 7 hours of running. Share this post Link to post

gentleman 0 Posted February 4, 2002 On what point of the installation do you get the error? Is it when it restarts? I am not familiar with such an error, but it looks to me that xp is not able to find your cd-drive after restarting. Have you tried to copy the XP files first to your harddisk, and then try to install from there. If not. Try this, it might work. How to do this: (Best done on a clean formatted disc) -restart your computer in dos and go to the i386 map on the xp cd. -Then type: winnt /rx tempfiles (with this command the files needed for installation will be copied to a directory "tempfiles". After installation this map will automatically be removed. The directory name tempfiles is just an example i use. You can give it any name you want) When all files are copied, the setup will start and take through the rest. hope it will be of help Share this post Link to post
