Win2k unprovoked program exit

Recommended Posts

Sometimes Win2k just shuts down my "CADKEY" cad program.

No BSOD, no warning, no error message, it just closes the program and puts me back on the desktop (in less than 1 second).

Other CADKEY users have reported this same problem in Win2k.

The problem doesn't exist in Win98SE.

(Win2k, SP2, PIII-450 dual boot with Win98SE)

Any Idea's

TIA

Terry

The program might be just uncompatible.

Have you looked at the application log???

What does it say?

Does it do it everytime or just sometimes.

The problem only happens sometimes, usually after working the program hard (making alot of changes to the original geometry).

I don'y even know where to find app logs.

I Know I have all the latest ATI drivers.

ATI? Ooohhhhh.....

What card do you have? I hope not any of the Rage/Rage Pro/Rage 128 lines, as they are notorious for having poor OpenGL performance issues, especially in NT-based OSs. I have 4 engineers here that had Rage Pro video cards in their PCs, and when we went to Solidworks 2000 from Autocad R14 (3D parasolids vs. 2D drawings) we had all kinds of problems in NT4 using EDrawings and performing imports of drawings from other systems (Unigraphics, Catia, etc). I tried several different drivers from ATI, and I got one that was semi-stable with a newer release of EDrawings, but we would still get occasional issues. I got them GeForce MX-based cards, and they haven't had problems since.

Yea..

It's a Rage Mobility P-AGP 2X card built into a Dell Inspiron laptop.

Not replaceable as far as I know, I hope you're wrong.

Poor Support, What support...

ATI makes brilliant cards, not the drivers! smile

Well at least we know the cause.

The problem hasn't occured since I turned off some of the Win2K services

Unfortunately I now can not send e-mail attachments directly from Word.

I am able to turn these services off because I'm not connected to a network.

The services I turned off (set to manual and not started) are:

Computer browser

Distributed link tracking client

Indexing Service

Messenger

Remote registry service

Run as service

Server

TCP/IP net bios helper service

Windows management instrumentation

Can anyone tell me which one is stopping me from sending e-mail attachments directly from Word.

ALSO-can anyone tell me where to find out exactly what each of the services do?

Tia smile

Terry
