DremNeonBlack 0 Posted November 13, 2001 I can't use Windows Update. I enter the site and it tells me: New Windows Update Software Required The Windows Update site has been updated. To update your version of the software and begin using Windows Update, click Update Now ok, so I click Update Now.... Software Update Incomplete The Windows Update software did not update successfully. Below are some suggestions to help you proceed: You may have clicked No when prompted to accept the Trust Certificate. To allow the Windows Update site software to install, click Yes when presented with the Security Warning dialog box. Your Internet Explorer security settings may be set too high. To install the updated software and access Windows Update, Internet Explorer security must be set to medium or lower, and active scripting and the download and initialization of ActiveX controls must be enabled. Note These are the default settings for Internet Explorer. For more information about Internet Explorer security and instructions on how to change your security settings, read Microsoft Knowledge Base (KB) Article Q174360. Were these suggestions helpful? Send us your feedback. Now I have tried millions of security settings in Internet Explorer and the Firewall. I set everything to it's absolut lowest security, but it still doesn't work. Im ripping my hair out any minute now. PS. About the trust certificate that was presented upon entering the Windows Update site, I think I clicked YES and Im almost certain I did I must have, since it doesn't show up anymore. Does anyone have a clue what could be wrong here? thanks for any input Share this post Link to post
Reidyn 0 Posted November 14, 2001 That happened to me for one entire day. It worked fine the next day. Most likely it is the other end, not yours. Try again later. Share this post Link to post
DremNeonBlack 0 Posted November 14, 2001 I thought so too, but it still doesn't work. It works fine in winME though, I have the same firewall settings there. Share this post Link to post
JohnnyChangs 0 Posted February 20, 2002 ...Bumping this one back up... I have the same issue with Windows Update on my Windows XP machine. The problem with Windows Update started happening just around the time that the news of the WinXP serial maker came out. Now I have a copy of Windows XP Pro Corporate edition, which is used for work purposes, since my company has a MS Select agreement. I heard a rumor that Microsoft is disabling the Windows Update feature for the Corporate edition because that some of the cracks and keygen programs use corp. edition files or corp. serial numbers (that don't require you to activate). Can someone who has WinXP Pro Corporate edition give Windows Update a try and see if it works? I'm wondering if one of the programs I installed, like XP Antispy disabled some features that Windows Update needs. Thanks Share this post Link to post
Marktait 0 Posted February 20, 2002 I just used Windows Update last night and it was fine, because i downloaded some driver updates but tonight is the total opposite response. All i get is everything loading fine but once its counted to 75% of checking updates it then just freezes and the Internet Explorer window just doesnt do anything anymore, just completly blank screen,Task Manager doesnt report it as not responding either.Hope Windows Update does start working again. ---------------------------------- AMD 1700+ Athlon XP ASUS A7V133A VIA Motherboard 512MB PC-133 RAM 64MB GeForce 3 Ti200 (Det 27.10) 60GB IBM 7200RPM HardDrive 16x/48x LG DVDDrive 40x Compag CDDrive 16x/10x/40x LiteON ReWriter Creative SoundBlaster Live! 1024 Player Creative 4.1 Surround Sound 1600 Speakers 10/100 Netgear Ethernet Adapter - Cable Connection WinTV Primio FM TV/Radio Tuner ---------------------------------- Windows XP Professional Corporate Platinum Edition Windows XP Plus Pack Office XP Corporate Edition with Frontpage Publisher XP Corporate Edition Share this post Link to post
DremNeonBlack 0 Posted February 21, 2002 I noticed something funny. If I create another user with administrative rights and log on to that profile, Windows Update works just fine. Hmmm. Share this post Link to post
JohnnyChangs 0 Posted February 22, 2002 I fixed my issue. I tried creating a new user with Admin rights, and running Windows Update while logged into that account, which didn't work. I then reset all the IE6 security to LOW, which again didn't work. I then figured I would check what Services I had running. A while back I went to some webpage that some Dingbat wrote about what services are "Safe" to set to manual and disble in Windows XP. I'm sure most of the Services he said to set to Disable were fine. But not knowing which one, I went through and started up some random services I disabled. Then I ran Windows Update and it worked fine. I'm gonna search the forums and possibly post another topic on which deafult installed services are known to be SAFE to disable in Windows XP. Thanks for everyone's comments. Share this post Link to post
insaNity 0 Posted February 23, 2002 Well, I have changed a LOT of my services to MANUAL perhaps that is the problem? you disabled them went any decent guide recommends most you should change to manual. Share this post Link to post
Marktait 0 Posted February 23, 2002 Windows Updates started working again for me now! Share this post Link to post
ThC 129 0 Posted February 24, 2002 I DO NOT recommend setting services to disabled, whoever wrote that is an idiot. The only service that should be disabled is the Universal PnP service because of the security hole it posses. Set service to random, but make sure you write down or take a screen shot of what was and wasn't running before you change them. Share this post Link to post
insaNity 0 Posted February 24, 2002 The Universal PnP service is not the only one that poses a threat...You should disable any networking ones you dont use and set any other ones you think you dont need to manual. Quote: Set service to random What do you mean by that? Share this post Link to post
