WINXP CD-ROM Problem ????

Recommended Posts

Hi im fairly experienced at windows etc but I have recently Installed Windows XP. I Installed it off my hard drive. After it was installed I configured all my settings etc and Im really pleased with it but when I went to begin installing programs off CD I noticed My drive Icon was not there only A: and C: - I have fiddled with my bios settings - tried all jumper combinations etc but XP is not detecting the drive. It was a LG CD Writer so I thought Id try putting my 40x Asus drive in to see if it would work then - Same problem. Im really stuck and I will be grateful if someone can point me right direction. is there a generic driver I need to download? a fix/patch - the only drivers I can find are the dos mscdex ones which arent relevant on XP.

Please can someone help me overcome this problem as I dont want to return to win98 ( and WIN-ME is crap smile )

Just incase its important - When I disconnnect my CD Drive from my comp windows starts incredibly fast but when I connect it as well as not detecting it there is about a 3 minute wait with just a black screen just before windows launches intop the GUI and after its laoded the splash screen stuff etc.

I have:

Windows XP Proffesional

Asus Motherboard with VIA Chipset

40X ASUS CDROM DRIVE - LG CD WRITER (I want the LG Writer To Work the most but possibly both?)

Anyway I've whined enough - Please let me know - thank you

Yeah I Tried That before and no luck - I've reinstalled a few times - I had Windows 2000 before this and had identical problems with it so I tried XP which I prefer now and same probs. I really need to get this sorted out. Both My Asus CD rom drive and my LG CD writer are supported by win xp i checked but it just refuses to detect any of them frown Please help me out guys/gals
