windows xp and sidewinder problems

Help! I have a sidewinder force feedback joystick and am having trouble getting it to work in windows xp. When I try to auto detect it under game controllers it tells me "your game controller is not configured properly see your device manager" Thanks, any help is apreciated.

I had a problem similar to this in Win2k with my MS FF Wheel. The only way I fixed it was to upgrade my DirectX.
