Changing RAM on XP

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I've noticed something weird:

I don't know if it's accidental but I've had three occurences of the same problem.

If I have installed XP and I change the Ram in that machine the system won't boot anymore and keeps telling me that this and thus driver or dll can't be found.

If I plug the original RAM back in everything works fine.

Now , the Ram is not malfunctioning, They're just bigger ones and supported types. Speed setting etc is all correct.

As I said , I've noticed this three times.

Anyone has a idea about this ?

especially how it can be avoided ?

I have seen that exact same scenario in Win2K. The stick of RAM that I had worked fine with other systems, but didn't seem to like the motherboard (ASUS P3B-F, what's not to like? :)) at all and would throw up those same errors. This particular stick of RAM was from Kingston, and works fine in other systems, just not that one.

While I haven't run into that same problem exactly, I had some ram that acted funny on one machine--lockups and soforth--but didn't have any issues in other machines. Sometimes ram may also not like the other ram you have= problems.

I had a PC that when I installed an additional stick of 256MB (same manufacture: Crucial, speed, etc) the PC blue screened right off the bat.

I decided to do a rebuild and rebuilt the PC with both sticks and it was fine from then on.

Weirder things happen!!!!!
