pmistry 0 Posted September 21, 2004 That Doom 1 to Doom 3 engine thing looks really great. I just hope it doesn't hit the wall and not get completed, there are 45 levels in the Ultimate Doom game, lets hope it all gets done. Its just that back in the Quake 2 engine, a team wanted to redo the original Doom, but they canned a promising project at the end of the first episode...too bad, but I guess one can just get sick of creating maps. I remember my days as a mapper for Heretic. I used to grow tired of making stuff and wanted to get on with real life things. Lets hope they finish this one up, I personally would have liked Doom 2...oh well. Maybe they will start that afterward! Lol Share this post Link to post
pmistry 0 Posted September 22, 2004 When it comes to game modification, the enthusiasm is always there, but the time and patience gets lost over the months, and then game projects never come out. Doom Millennium was supposed to be the best Doom wad ever made, it seems like it is dead, but it was scheduled to come out in 1999, they had updates in 2001 that the project was still coming, but its now 2004, I should check up on it. The Quake 1 to Quake 2 project, was great, they got the first few levels done, but that was about it. The Quake 2 Generations mod was really great, it had the Doom guy and his weapons, along with the Quake guy and the Quake 2 guy and the Wolfenstein guy all in 1 mod. Each guy had their own weapons and abilities, for example the Doom guy could drop large distances without getting hurt because of his suit. But the project got into beta but never went beyond that. Also the Blood 1 to Quake project, called Qblood disappeared but I played the first 3 levels and it was amazing. Oh lets not forget Duke Nukem Forever or Prey, Prey got canned even though 3D Realms said it would come for sure. As for Duke Forever, I doubt it would be available, that game is in one messed up development cycle. If it does come out, it will be because some other company took over the development. That game was supposed to 1997. Its just too bad, but I don't blame the guys, it can get tiresome especially since you get no money really. But I think the idea is to get noticed. I wish this team all the best and luck, it is promising. Share this post Link to post
pmistry 0 Posted October 14, 2004 The Doom Millennium was supposed to be the best because of all the great features the team was incorporating into the MOD. Keep in mind that this was back in 1999, and Doom Millennium was like an early attempt at a really good source port for Doom. Although with Doomsday, the features seem kinda dull. The WADs levels are what seem the most impressive, they have taken down the screenshots but there are some amazing screens of detailed level design for Doom, there are new weapons, new monsters, and new abilities like jump. The weapons and monsters are incorporated without losing other monsters. (No Sprite Replacements like in other WADs) The team also incorporated native Windows support, CD audio, enhanced MIDI, full mouse control, etc, but again this was 1998/1999. As for the Generations MOD, you can get info here, there might be a beta download or pre release or even a 1.0 release of the project. http://www.planetquake.com/generations/ Share this post Link to post
Bobby64 0 Posted October 21, 2004 I've read this whole thread and all the OpenGL ports that I use have been mentioned... except for one. What? No GLDuke??? You all need to check out JFDuke3D: http://jonof.edgenetwork.org/index.php?p=jfduke3d This port has fulfilled all of my Duke3D needs. What a great game! Share this post Link to post

pmistry 0 Posted October 22, 2004 I know pretty much all of those ports, EDGE and PR Doom, there was also MBF, Boom ports, and yeah the Vavoom Project has been around forever. Thanks for compiling and contributing all those links for those Quake games, I gave that Hexen 2 Unofficial patch a whirl awhile back, its nice to see someone doing that, Share this post Link to post

APK In theory, Heretic isn't abandonware, it can still be bought brand new from idsoftware's website. Actually the whole argument of abandonware is a gray area, since all the major companies still own the copyrights for those games. Even if you can't buy them in the store, but places like Ebay you can snag a good, clean, copy of Heretic for less than 10 dollars. Share this post Link to post

Tomay 0 Posted February 24, 2005 Did any of you try to play this games from "pure" dos. c:\>cd quake c:\quake>quake I have an old PIII machine with an old sound card and voodoo3000, but i'm not sure about the drivers. Share this post Link to post

I just don't know how to get glide working on those cards or GL working in a DOS environment, but I do remember it was possible. Share this post Link to post

pmistry 0 Posted March 2, 2005 I hope one day Epic will release some source code for the original Unreal engine or maybe they have...I am not sure but here are some interesting patches and drivers I have found for the Unreal Engine. Unreal 1 and Return To Na Pali: http://www.oldunreal.com/ This website has guides for getting the S3TC textures working on modern cards that virtually all support DXTC texture formats. It also has an ehanced OpenGL driver for Unreal. Unreal Tournament: http://cwdohnal.home.mindspring.com/utglr/ This website is the homepage for the development of an enhanced OpenGL driver for Unreal Tournament. UT runs very nicely with this driver, and it has improved visual quality. As a bonus the latest driver release supports Deus Ex! Eye Candy Project for UT/UT2003 and more: http://home.comcast.net/~oo7mike/Projects_eyecandy.htm Now this is amazing, run the Eye Candy patch and I swear you will be amazed at how detailed Unreal Tournament can really be! I wish we could get some enhanced port for all the Unreal engine games similar to the Doomsday Engine. Then we could get Unreal, Unreal: Return To Na Pali, Unreal Tournament, Deus Ex, Rune, Star Trek DS9, and any other Unreal engine games a nice boost in compatibility. I have recently been replaying Rune, and it could use a better GL or Direct3D driver. Its buggy with newer cards...but I have gotten it to work okay for now. Share this post Link to post
pmistry 0 Posted March 4, 2005 That Eye Candy Mod for UT is unbelievable. Load up the CTF-FacingWorlds map and look at the Earth, with Eye Candy the detail is exceptional. Share this post Link to post
Diehard 0 Posted March 7, 2005 Hi all, I just stumbled over this forum, and i thought i definately need to give a reply Quote: Unreal 1 and Return To Na Pali: http://www.oldunreal.com/ This website has guides for getting the S3TC textures working on modern cards that virtually all support DXTC texture formats. It also has an ehanced OpenGL driver for Unreal. At this moment we are working on the S3TC Unreal-Retexturing-Project (for short URProject or URP) The base of the project lies in the fact Unreal fully supports S3TC textures, in effect this means that Unreal can run equal quality textures as UT2004 If you have Unreal, than already there are texture packages available which are usable in the game, at this moment we are trying to create new S3TC textures that are missing in the game. Here is the link to the project itself: URProject And here is the link to some comparising pictures between a normal and a S3TC Unreal version : Deck16 Sinfonia I want to make note that this is is also possible for UT, in fact the textures we use at this moment originate from UT. As far as other games that run on the Unreal engine, like: Rune, Deus-Ex, Wheel Of Time, DS9 The Hidden, Klingon Honor Guard, Undying and Nerf Arena blast (lol that last one is a horrible game, i cant image why they gangbanged/raped the Unreal engine for that, but nm lol) i didn't try them yet, but theoretically they should be able to run S3TC textures as well. All textures, sounds, music are completely compatible, so yes if a modded OpenGL patch would work on them, why not............... At this moment i don't think that the communities of those games are aware this is possible. The problem we are working right now, is we need a tool to create the texture packages (UnrealEd itself doesn't support them ) Since there are already S3TC textures available, it is possible to do, so its just a matter of time before new texture packages can be created. But yeah people, go have a look at those examples . . . Share this post Link to post
pmistry 0 Posted March 8, 2005 Hey thanks for contributing that information, and those examples do look great. I have stumbled on those pages before, great stuff, and please post updates here whenever you get the chance. Share this post Link to post
Mauler 0 Posted March 10, 2005 Awesome work Gentlemen! I had checked out some OpenGL ports of Doom, Duke3D & Blood (Blood *unf*) but they didn't really amount to much...but that was years ago. It's good to see that some people are dedicated and still going, I'll definately be checking out the .WAD based stuff as I still have those games on CD indoors...is anyone planning to update HeXen2? Bullfrog's two Syndicate games may be worth a mention too (the Dungeon Keeper series too, but both those run under Windows fine) as Syndicate & Syndicate Wars are both absolute classics but have trouble on the Win32/64 platform with not just the usual DOS drivers/memory issues but SWARS was just WAY too fast! lol Share this post Link to post

athfemory 0 Posted March 13, 2005 Hi. I found this site searching for a GL port for Blood. I have Transfusion, but that's not what I was looking for.. I've been using Transfusion for a while, but I want to do something with the single player part of the game, not botmatch. If anyone has a link to anything, I would greatly appreciate it. By the way, this is a great topic. I've been into GL Ports of old games for a while.. I have every one of the mentioned ports for Doom, Hexen, Quake, and Duke3D. Thanks. Share this post Link to post

Same here, I hope someone creates a port for the original Blood. I do remember back trying to get the Glide version of Blood working on my Rage 128 with a Glide Wrapper, I haven't experimented for a while and that was several years ago. Might be worth trying for someone up to the task, and with a new glide wrapper. Share this post Link to post
athfemory 0 Posted March 14, 2005 I just got Blood 2 last night (after hunting it down for 2 years). I really enjoy it, but I'd appreciate it even more if I could play Blood. I don't really care if I get GL support or not; as long as I can get sound working I'd happily play it in DOS or in 320x200. No big deal to me. Well, good luck with the search for a Blood port. In fact, I think the Transfusion team should port single player to the Darkplaces engine. Even that would make me happy. Share this post Link to post
