XP on an NT network

Recommended Posts

I just bought 2 new computers loaded with Windows XP and connected them to my network. I am running Windows NT 4.0. The other 8 computers on the network are running Win98. The XP computers keep loosing their connection to the network. They reconnect automatically and then they loose it again. They have been going on and off all day. This has never happened to any of the other computers on the network. Any suggestions on how I can maintain a constant connection? Thanks.

When you say "losing", do you mean they cannot connect anymore, or that they have little red "X" marks next to mapped drives and such? If the latter, that is just a timeout function of Win2K/XP, and if I remember correctly it can be adjusted. It can be found on technet:

If I can find it again later, I will post a link to it.

If only one of the computers running XP is connected to the NT server it works fine. The problem is when I try to connect both XP computers to the network then they both disconnect. They think they are being connected to a workstation instead of a dedicated server. I replaced two Windows 98 workstations with the XP workstations so it is not a problem with my network. The problem seems to be how the XP workstations view the network.

Thanks for the help.
