How to locate the controlling .exe and stop auto loading Tas

Recommended Posts

I have two Taskbar icons (far right side of task bar by volume icon) that I apparently picked up while surfing. While I can make these icons disappear by right-clicking each icon and selecting their "exit" option, I've been unable to find the file that's associated with them that initiates their being loaded into the taskbar in the first place.

My question is this. Does Win2KPro have a run command I can initiate that will allow me to track "load commands" during bootup? Or, is there a better way to find where these icon/files are coming from, so I can kill them permanently? Or, is there an equivalent Win98SE's msconfig that provides a method for stopping load-commands by simply checking them off from a list?

SnaperOne,

You need to check the following registry entries (use REGEDT32):

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnceEx

HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnceEx

Check the "Load" key for the following:

HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Windows

Nemesis and El_Mono, thanks for the info. I've already downloaded Startup Control Panel, but will still go poking around inside the Registry simply because I like to see what's going on in there. Thanks again.............one annoying little file is well on its' way to extinction.

use msconfig.exe to find your program.

Just type "msconfig" into your run line and the program lets you find stuff.

G'day SnapperOne and all,

To manage my applications that startup on boot I use a tool called Startup Manager. It has great write-ups and can be found here
