'Access violation 0xC0000005' and BSOD in W2K

I've been having a complete nightmare trying to get my computer stable under 2k for ages now.. certain games i.e shogo or UT based games (especially Deus Ex) lock up the machine (black screen) on startup or crash on exit with '0xC0000005 access violation' errors (sometimes happens with IE6 too).

 

In addition to this I ocasionally get BSOD, either 'stop 0XA1 IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL' or 'stop 0xE1 KMODE_EXECPTION in ks.sys'.

 

In general performance is sluggish too.

 

Any ideas what the problem could be or where I might start looking?

No pimpin_228 it not the One word "XP" thing more like due the fact he has ACPI Enabled.

ks.sys is the problem. If that is related to ACPI, then yes, that'd be a slight problem. XP does need a service pack, but I don't think it is the problem because:

 

He's running Windows 2000 SP2.

 

As for sluggish performance, you might want to think about picking up another stick of 128.

Hey Curley Boy,

 

I just joined ntcompatible today when I noticed your post. I was having the exact same problem! SHS is right, even though it gives you that "IRQ_NOT_LESS" crap, you shouldn't have a IRQ conflict due to ACPI. My system has 6 components on IRQ 11 and is running fine.....NOW. My problem was HEAT!

 

My PC was getting too damn hot when I played games like UT or SOF Gold. True, this may not be your problem, but get a piece of software like "Motherboard Monitor 5" (http://mbm.livewiredev.com/) just to make sure. That will let you check out your PC's temp. If you get past 50 degrees celcius, your'e ready for a crash. Once I found out this was my problem, I bought a beefier heatsink and a couple case fans.

 

It looks like you have all your drivers updated, as well as the via 4-in-1 update.....so heat is the only think I can think of. That was my main problem.
