Messenger & ICS

Hi Guys,

 

I have two computers.

 

I have setup ICS on it. Intenret is working fine on the Client Computer but Messenger doens't work.

 

I cna't send receive files. Also I cant talk.

 

I have heard some thing about port mapping can make it possible. Can someone tell me about it. Secondly, I was unable to find the Applications tab that used to be in Windows 2000 in XP.

 

Please help me on this.

I have no idea. You mean on the client computer.

 

I have windows 2000 on the client computer and windows xp on the server.

I have tried everything allready: mapping ports, running a socks server (which helps for icq btw) but msn just doesn't want to send/recieve files on client computers... Same **** with yahoo messenger.

But how do we map ports in Windows XP? I just want to know atleast.

 

Secondly, what about voice conversation? Does that work?

To my knowledge, you can't. You need to use some sort of Gateway/NAT/Firewall software that will let you specify port-forwarding information. Also, make sure the problem is in fact on your end and not on the other end. Try connecting to two friends who can connect to each other. If they can connect together, but neither can with you, you know the problem is you.

I am 100% sure the problem is on my client computer, because from my server computer, I can talk/send files to others.

There's not way to make msn voicechat or send files on a clinet computer. I tried everything allready like i said above. MS knows about that issue (it's stated on the msn messenger download page) but is not planning to fix it. Yahoo messenger has the problem too. It seems icq is the only program that works correctly on clients (through a socksserver).

But then what are the ports that they say, you can map and make it work on network.

If you were to set up NAT and port-forwarding, it would work. What happens is the server would receive the connection on the server on say port 1313, and it would see that traffic to that port is to be forwarded to 192.168.0.2 (or whatever your client's IP is) and would forward it. This would end up appearing as just one more hop in the connection. However, you can not set up port forwarding in XP without 3rd-party software. And on top of all that, this would most likely make a direct connection on the server impossible, unless you turned port forwarding off to connect.

Guys, if somebody remember, there was an application TAB when you go to the properties of an internet connection.

 

I remember I used to configure Dialpad port at that time, but it is missing in XP.

 

 

Can someon tell where it is?

i have never bene able to "Receive" files when i am on a networked computer (192.*..) sometimes i send, but not always.

 

I would assume this is due to the person sending you the info, the messenger is looking for your messenger on the IP of the server, and does not know ot look on any 192. ip's? just a dumb guess.

ICS is designed to be a quick and easy way to share very basic Internet connectivity. For full configuration benefits, you should install a NAT server or a proxy server. But here's a possible solution, if it works.

 

I haven't verified if this works, because I haven't needed to set it up. But it seems easy to map ports to services running on your client in ICS of the XP host.

 

On your internet connection Advanced tab, where you select to enable ICS, click the Settings button. You will see the default list of services that you can add port mappings for. Since Messenger isn't on the list, click Add. Supply a description, IP, an internal port (the port number that the service on your network is using) and external port (the port number that external computers will use to contact this service) for the Messenger service, and select TCP or UDP (should all be TCP for Messenger). You will need to configure a separate setting for each port, since it does not allow you to set a range of ports (yuck). You should provide a host name (name of client computer) instead of an IP. This will avoid you having to configure a static IP for the client running the Messenger service, otherwise DHCP may assign it a different IP from the one you configure here.

Don't think that works I needed to do that for things to work through the XP firewall with a single machine, but when I used ICS it never worked.

 

Since I've got an ADSL router all Messenger functionality works again (that wasn't the main reason for a router BTW ).

Hi all,

 

I too am having this Messenger prob, but it's also occuring with POP mail retrieval thru Outlook Express (OE)/Notes 5 - the really frustrating thing is I can SEND mail from my Client box (XP Pro) thru the server (2000 Server with ICS enabled).

 

I've tried checking the settings suggested by Davros previously - tho instead of adding Messenger, I enabled the POP/SMTP options and specified the Client box's name (correct?) but to no avail

 

I've verified that retrieval works if I use the version of OE on the server box but I'd love to set this up "properly" if at all possible.

 

Has ANYONE out there managed to resolve these problems with ICS (preferably without the need for new hardware ) or can they recommend some software that will do it?

Just to add to the knowlege (or lack in my case) I connect to the internet via server running Winroute lite and cable modem and have mapped the ports as advised but sending files via instant messanger does not work.

 

It seems it may not be possible !!

Hi guys,

 

Having done a bit of reading on this overnight, I decided to try out WinGate Proxy (there's a trial version on their site if anyone's interested) - since I've done this, Notes/OE now works with my POP3 mail account but still no go on Messenger (despite my giving it "global access" in the Wingate app)...I'll keep tryin and let u know!

what are you using for your outgoing mail server, if it is like

 

mail.mail.com

 

ping that address, and put in the straight IP address, do this for your incoming as well, this will also result in faster email sending / receiving.

 

Do u use teh same outgoing, as incoming? If so, make sure u got it set in outlook to use the same login info as your incoming.

Sygate will map your ports. In fact, if you go to their site and download the application list, all the port forwarding templates are automatically added.

Do yourself a favor and just by a router with built in switch. ICS is very slow and slows down your connection.
