Can I dual boot XP like this?

Hi, I wan't to dual boot XP with either 98se or winME(i know it sucks think SE cd is dead though) to play some games that don't function too well in win2k/xp.

I was wondering if I could format, install win98 to say c:\win98 then just install XP to c:\windows would it still work?

It would work but i do'nt recommend to do it that way, cuz your program files directory will be shared. That can lead to problems. I recommend you make a primary partition with FDISK and an extended partition.

Install win98/Me, then install winxp ffrom within 98/Me and make sure you choose to install on a new partition during the setup.

Likewise, I wouldn't recommend putting it on the same partition either. I'm not sure who, I think CrazyKillerMan or ThC129 did a dual boot with Win2k and 98 on the same partition at one point. Not sure how well it worked out though.

Yeah, you can dual boot on the same partition. There's a good chance of a program mistaking the nt folder for the 98 folder, and overwriting a system file. I tried it once, but didn't like it. I use system commander now. I like to keep my os's completely seperate, so if one goes down (this *is* msft, you know), I still have a perfectly good working os on the other side.

To save yourself from lots of trouble in the future it is recommended to install each OS on different partitions. I am dual booting Win 98SE/Win XP Pro right now. Before that I was dual booting Win 98SE/Win 98 SE on separate partitions.

i did it a while back with Win2k and WinMe on the same FAT32 Partition, for the most part it ran fine, but got confusing as far as installing programs went (Shared Program Files Directory as stated above). I suggest you do it with separate partitons.

Take the time to make a seperate partition...one works for awhile, but then crap starts hapenin. I dual booted win2k and win98se, it worked cause I relocated my 98SE program files, to another hd before i installed 2k, and as we all know, winnt and windows are two seperate directories so you USUALLY dont run into problems there. Having them on the same partitions though, each OS will keep track of most used programs for optimal performance...which means when u boot into 98se and defrag, then go back into 2k, it will be a mess!
