shassouneh 0 Posted January 10, 2002 Dear All, This applies to BOTH Windows 2000 and Windows XP. Is there any way to password-protect shared files/folders?? For example, say I want to share my CD Drive as "cdrom" yet I want ONLY a specifc user to have access to it through his/her username and password. How do you do this? Note: I do NOT want to use the "allow users to change files" option, I just want to password-protect a specifric file or folder such that it is inaccessible by anyone else except that user with his/her password! Please help. Thanx. Specifcs: Files are to be shared over a simple LAN network. The LAn consists of WORKGROUPS only, no domains! Share this post Link to post
Palos 0 Posted January 10, 2002 LOL man, I wanted to do the EXACT thing last week over at a friend's. I ended up simply sharing the stuff. In 2000 I think you can create an user who's name matches the client's logon name, and like this you can map a network drive with/without passwords. Otherwise, it will go thru user Guest. The bad part was that the guy had XP Home, which does not allow you to change users/groups via the User Manager. Only XP Pro has it Also, I could not find that extra tab in the Drive Properties that allows me to set the Security on it (via users/groups/rights), such a thing was in NT (dunno exactly about 2000). If you find a way to do this, please let me know as well...I'm still interested! Share this post Link to post
ThC 129 0 Posted January 10, 2002 I know in 2000 that you can make folders accessable to people only by using the security tab on the drive same as in XP. The only thing is that in XP you have to go to folder ---> options then take off Use Simple file sharing. Then the security tab will show up. Share this post Link to post
shassouneh 0 Posted January 11, 2002 I think i may have figured this out after all. This really is a two step process. Read and see if you can understand what i mean 1.) First, we must make sure simple file sharing is DISABLED. you want the complex file sharing not the simple one. Open up a folder in windows explorer then... a.) go to Tools -> Folder options b.) Click on the 'View' tab c.) Scroll all the way down to "Use simple file sharing (recommended)" and make sure its UNCHECKED 2.) Locate the folder or drive you wish to share a.) right click the folder/drive you wish to share and choose "Sharing And Security" b.) If necessary, click on "I understand the risks..." to enable the sharing options c.) If necesary, click on "share this folder" to enable the sharing options d.) go ahead and make the sharing options you want like share name, etc... e.) Click on the PERMISSIONS. In here you can set which user(s) have access to this share and in what ways!!! f.) To customize permissions further, click on the "security" tab and mess around there too! Of coarse make sure in the PERMISSIONS sections to add only existing users, or groups. If needed, make sure to add the users with their passwords, and set up the groups using COmputer management. (right click my computer and choose manage to do this). good luck! I hope this helps! let me know if it doesn't and I'll try to explain better! good luck! Share this post Link to post
