ntvdm.exe errors on program installation

Recommended Posts

Any help on the following would be greatly appreciated.

I recently upgraded a system running Win95 to Win2000 Professional. The installation process appeared to work fine. The problem I am having now is that I am unable to install many different programs. I can install MSOffice and Adaptec software, but I can't install any drivers from my motheboard disk or from my Video Card disk. Various other programs won't work either. The error message I get is:

"ntvdm.exe has generated errors" and it goes on to tell me I have to close down the program.

It was recommended that I install Service Pack 1, which I did, but this did not change anything. Then I installed Service Pack 2, and still no change. Could this be hardware conflicts? bad memory? I need help!

System:

QDI Advance 10F Motherboard

Via/Cyrix 733Mhz

256MHz SDRAM PC133

3dBlaster Riva TNT2 32Meg Video Card

Maxtor 40G HD

LG 8x4x32 CDRW

note: I am planning on installing my modem and soundcard after I know that Windows 2000 is running correctly.

Personally I wouldn't have upgraded. I would have run a straight install. Got a friend who started his PI system out with DOS 6 something or other, and then upgraded to Win3.1, Win95, added USB support, and then moved on to Win98 FE... Needless to say, the thing runs pretty poorly.

I couldn't imagine the problems that running as powerful an OS as 2k on something like FAT or FAT16 would do to it, but it can't be good. Unless I am horribly mistaken, I would backup, format, and load fresh.
