jleinen 0 Posted January 21, 2002 Windows 2000 will not shutdown. I have an atx case with Abit BE6 m/b with latest bios update. Just a tnt2ultra installed. Win2K will not completely shutdown. It will write to the disk then give me a "its safe to shut down screen". Then I have to shut down by turning off power supply. It should shut down power on its own with the atx power supply. This same setup works fine with Win98 or ME. I'm stumped. I have installed Win2K 3 times and it still will not work right. Anyone have any ideas. omeone please help. Share this post Link to post
kgeissler 0 Posted January 21, 2002 Isn't there a setting in the BIOS to enable this? It might be under power management. I can't recall the exact setting though. Share this post Link to post
jleinen 0 Posted January 26, 2002 Thanks kgeissler that helped me out quite a bit. I went and checked on VIA Hardware.com at Pauls FAQ's and there was some similar information there. You were right about the BIOS setting. But I did have to enable ACPI and THEN reinstall Windows 2000 fresh. If ACPI isn't enabled when you install Windows 2000 it will never recogonize the ACPI even if you go back after the install and enable it in the BIOS. And if you do install Windows 2000 with the ACPI enabled in the bios and go back after the install and disable it, that will corrupt the system. Anyway just thought I would add this info to what I learned from you. A lot of bright people in this forum. I love it. Thanks again. Share this post Link to post
JP- 0 Posted January 26, 2002 Just so you know, you can still get windows 2000 to turn off your computer even with ACPI disabled. Just go to the power options bit in control panel and enabled 'APM' support and it will do it. Just for future reference or if anyone else has this problem Share this post Link to post
jleinen 0 Posted January 26, 2002 M4Carbine could you please give me a better detail on how to get to set this APM. I know I can get the computer to shutdown manually by changing the power button option. But I am talking about doing an automatic shutdown thru software. Could you please be more specific. I am fairly new to Win2K. Always have had dual boot Win98/NT before. Some of this stuff throws me for a loop. I would appreciate some help. Thanks Share this post Link to post
JP- 0 Posted January 26, 2002 OK, the screen will only appear if you have your PC setup to not use ACPI. Right click on desktop -> properties. Screen saver tab, click 'power' button. Should see an 'APM' tab, click it and it has 1 checkbox that says something like 'enable APM support'. Tick that, reboot and it will shut down totally rather than say it is now safe to turn off.
