Im waiting for the prices of a pure Geforce 3 to go down...a Ti500 or even an "old" GF3 is a better value for money than the GF4.

 

Either way, it's gonna be an improvement over my GF2-MX400

Anyone know a place in the UK with the ti4600 yet? Thing is you can guarantee they will bring out a ti5000 or something as the 'ultra'.

From what I understand, the Ti4600 is supposed to be the "Ultra" version.

Yeah but they do the same every time, initially release a bunch of cards and then make better faster ones (at default). I would probably buy 1 if i could be sure that they wouldnt go and do this.

On the day NVidia don't do this to their customers there will be a few other things I'll be doing on the same day.

 

First I shall be popping down to my local computer vendor to collect my free copy of Windows & Office.

Then I shall purchase my new Intel P4 CPU for it's retail price of £50.

Then, on-line to purchase Adobe Photoshop for £30.......

 

NVidia always do this to their customers I'm afraid, any card you buy from them, even the very best, will only be the top of the range for a maximum of 6months, usually less.

yeah but what i mean is that i can upgrade from a gf3 to a gf4 and feel ok about it, but i need to have the fastest card in the class and upgrading from a normal gf4 to an ultra gf4 would not make me happy

I think your just wasteing your money in the long you all ready have GF3 why not wait for GF5 or NV3 I don't see that big of diff GF3 vs GF4 but for thoses with GF2 or GF2MX they should upgarde to a newer card like this or your could just wait 6to9 more mouths for next card.

I think nVidia have gone nuts with this five diff card idea:o

Hey, by the way, yea, my friend got a gf4, and haha, its alright, not that big of a diff between gf3, I didn't see much, and compared to a 8500 by ati, the image quality and color saturation is nothing, ATI still rules that way, give them a month or two for new drivers and the 8500 will kick the gf4's butt and then the r300 will come, I have a Rage Fury, and the drivers have matured and its a better card than a gf2mx on my comp, I have a gf2mx too, but its ****, its on my sis's comp now, but ATI is the way to go, I think gf4 is a waste of money honestly

Any where from Sept to Dec 2002 M4Carbine on both nVidia NV3 and ATI R300 that my best guest.

If all gose well on ATI part, ATI should have upper hand on nVidia why that well words was there add Hardware MPEG1/2/4 decodeing/encodeing and DX9 on R300 chip but the real question is can they pull this off being DX9 beta hasn't ever started and it take up to 1yr to made full compatible DirectX kit my though on this not like lee.

There is one down side with GF4Ti vs GF4MX the lowend GF4MX has better DVD decodeing then the GF4Ti I don't know about you but I can not see any paying $300 to $400 for GF4Ti that dosen't come with same level DVD decodeing as GF4MX this is just so damm on nVidia part but then againe REALmagic Xcard going better then ATI and nVidia DVD decodeing any way.

Hmm, there is no way i would be buying a gf4mx, it would be just like having a renamed gf2 8)

 

It would be interesting to see if nvidia come out with new drivers that improve the performance of the gf4 by loads, like they did with det3 for the gf2s and det4 for the gf3s.

 

And sept-dec is ages i wanna spend money now!

I very much live by the "Once it can no longer do it's job I'll replace it" idea on video cards.

I owned a Matrox G400Max for a long time and it did everything I wanted it to do.

Then it started getting slow, games were becomming more demanding and although I loved the 2D quality of the Matrox, it had to go.

So, A GF2 Ultra was purchased.

To be honest I'm sure that card would still do exactly what I needed it to do, but it managed to die about a month after it's warranty ran out!

That's the only reason I own a GF3 Ti200.

I've got no real intention of purchasing a GF4.

What does it give me over I've got now?

Well games are still hard pushed to really push a GF3 to it's max.

Although I have run 3DMark2001 on my system, I'm not a point chaser, so really the new GF card offers me nothing new.

I'll wait to see what the GF5 offers, by then my current card will be over a year old.

That is NV30 by the way...NV25 is the GF4 and NV17 is the GF4-MX.

 

I still think that people who own GF2-MXes or even GF2 Pro/Ultra should wait till the price for a GF3 Ti500 goes down. The GF3 Ti500 beats the GF4-MX hands down, it has a second Vertex Shader and no bandwidth limitations (typical to the MX series).

Well, considering the features that the GeForce3 has that the GeForce2 doesn't aren't even really being used in games, (but will be soon with games such as Unreal II coming out) there seems to be a bit more of a reason to get a GeForce4 than a GeForce3 (ignoring the prices, and when refering to the 3D gaming scene).

 

The GF4 is better at not rendering things that won't appear (z-axis occluding) and has better anti-aliasing with less performance slowdown. So, these things can actually have more an effect in current games, compared to the GF3.

 

However, the GF4 _MX_ lacks some important features of the Geforce3, and getting one would only boost current 3D games while not being able to do advanced features that newer games such as Unreal II will take advantage of. So, relative to the GF3, a GF4 _MX_ could hurt in the long run.

 

Factoring in price, though, I'd say the GF3 Ti 200 is the way to go. That, or the GF4 4200, which I guess will be the budget _true_ GeForce4. To save money, though, if current games run at acceptable levels, hold out until they don't before upgrading.
