ThC 129 0 Posted February 17, 2002 Im looking to ditch my 60gb 5400rpm/ata100 drive in for something large (80gb+) and with ATA/133 support. What are some good drive recomendations from the users?? Ive looked at Western Digital since i would like to go with them again since both my drives are both WD drives. Also looked at maxtor since they make some good solid drives. Im not fond of IBM drives so not looking for a drive by them. Share this post Link to post
Marktait 0 Posted February 17, 2002 Have a look at Seagate too, they seem to be very fine drives, not sure if they are over the 80GB Drive mark tho and i havent had any problems with there drives. Unfortunately can't say the same about Maxtor in my experience, had 2 dodgy drives from them. ---------------------------------- 1st Computer ---------------------------------- AMD 1700+ Athlon XP ASUS A7V133A VIA Motherboard 512MB PC-133 RAM 64MB GeForce 3 Ti200 60GB IBM 7200RPM HardDrive 16x/48x LG DVDDrive 40x Compag CDDrive 16x/10x/40x LiteON ReWriter Creative SoundBlaster Live! 1024 Player Creative 4.1 Surround Sound 1600 Speakers 10/100 Netgear Ethernet Adapter - Cable Connection WinTV Primio FM TV/Radio Tuner ---------------------------------- 2nd Computer ---------------------------------- 1.2Ghz AMD Athlon Thunderbird 512MB PC-133 RAM 64MB GeForce 2 MX200 60GB IBM 7200RPM HardDrive 40GB Seagate 5400RPM HardDrive 16x/48x LG DVDDrive 24x/10x/40x Samsung ReWriter Creative SoundBlaster 128 10/100 Genius Ethernet Adapter - Cable Connection 10/100 Genius Ethernet Adapter - Laptop Networked 10/100 Genius Ethernet Adapter - 1st Computer connected 300Watt RMS 2.1 Active Subwoofer Logic Speakers ---------------------------------- Windows XP Professional Corporate Platinum Edition Windows XP Plus Pack Office XP Corporate Edition with Frontpage Publisher XP Corporate Edition Share this post Link to post
Brian Frank 0 Posted February 18, 2002 I could be wrong (heaven forbid), but I think Maxtor is the only one that has 'em out. Share this post Link to post
akoum 0 Posted February 18, 2002 I think Brian is right. If you want ATA/133 Maxtor is the only way to go. You could still use an ATA/100 drive if you don't like Maxtor. Share this post Link to post
BladeRunner 0 Posted February 18, 2002 It just shows how much real impact ATA133 has actually made - hardly any! ATA133 is Maxtor's standard and only they seem to be actively promoting it. I'm guessing that the likes of Seagate, WD & IBM would have to pay Maxtor some kind of licence fee ti use ATA133. As the real world differences between ATA100 & ATA133 are more or less un-noticeable I feel most companies are squarely aiming two fingers at Maxtor and will wait for the real differences - Serial ATA. ThC 129 0 Posted February 18, 2002 hmm i guess i will wait on it for a bit then and see who promotes what. Not many people are putting it as a standard on motherboards either besides Abit, and a few others. Share this post Link to post
JP- 0 Posted February 18, 2002 I ust have to say that ive run seagate/maxtor/ibm/western digital drives so far and of the 3 maxtor drives ive had 2 of them have broken after a year each. Running 2 ibms atm and authough they have a bad reputation for reliability ive had these since the 60gxps were first released and they still work perfectly. Share this post Link to post
pmistry 0 Posted February 19, 2002 I can't complain with Maxtor. I have had the DiamondMax 20GB ATA100 7200 RPM for 2 years now and it still runs great. Quiet and fast. I also have an old 4GB Western Digital Caviar drive and it too runs great still. I'd like to get my hands on a Seagate drive but they are near impossible to find. I haven't found a retailer here in Canada that stocks them. As for IBM disks, alot people have had problems, but some haven't, they are fast.... As for ATA133 forget it, Serial ATA is the next step up over ATA100. And yes Maxtor requires a serial/license fee for others like WD, Seagate and IBM to use ATA133. Share this post Link to post
