NotSoSmart 0 Posted February 23, 2002 XP Pro P4-16a P4T-E Asus 512 meg RDRAM GF2 SB Live Linksys 10/100 Nic IBM 60 gig IBM 20 gig DVD Toshiba Lite On 24x CDRW The problem is something I do not understand at all. I bought a Belkin Gold Series 350VA battery backup. Downloaded the software from there site, installed all is fine. After 2 days I get a overload warning and as it finshs the warning(voice) it then says no overload. I figure well 2 monitors and the CPU are to much for it. I unplugged one monitor and replugged it into one of the outlets that is just for surge protection. Suddenly it gives server overload warning and starts shutdown. Computer shutsdown. Now as soon as the computer boots with the UPS services set to automatic it just shuts itself down. I boot to safe mode set service to manual reboot. I run the configuration software and set all the shutdown setting to NOT shutdown. As soon as I start the UPS service it just starts the auto shutdown and turns the computer off. I'm at my wits end. Please tell me I missing something really simple and I will feel like a total dumbass. Oh I did a system restore and reinstalled the software and as soon as the UPS service started the computer shutdown TIA Share this post Link to post
NotSoSmart 0 Posted February 23, 2002 Well I found on APC site about this problem but it has to do with configuring the wrong comm port in the native windows UPS setup Filled out a support form with Belkin and will call during business hours. Even after trying what APC says to do which Belkin doesn't about disabling the UPS service it still loads there UPS service and starts the shutdown into motion and it can't be stopped. I had the same thought when I read this thread, so went & had a look - I think it's for a slightly different UPS-related prob. Quote: from M$ KB article about the patch SYMPTOMS You are unable to configure an uninterruptible power supply (UPS). The UPS service does not start and you may receive a Dr. Watson access violation or application error message in Ups.exe. Share this post Link to post
NotSoSmart 0 Posted February 24, 2002 That was the first thing I checked on cause I had remembered seeing it. I think it has to do with the fact that a USB battery backup device does NOT need the UPS service running in XP to work. The Belken software SAYS it is for all the microsoft operating systems but there is only a W2K inf file. Belkins software loads its OWN UPS service on startup and this is what is causing the problem. Windows can't commnicate with a UPS on the comm port so it just goes to the shutdown mode. I tested this with a APC Office backup I have here loaded it up and configured it WRONG and bam instant loop startup then shutdown. Boot to safe mode disable service reboot change the comm port to the correct port and then all is well. The Belkin software worked just fine till there was a power outage and it had to invoke the shutdown. After this the native windows UPS coding insisted on trying to communicate with a UPS via the comm port. APCs USB software automaticly disables the UPS service. Read this on there site also where I found out about the "loop" problem. I think this stems from the fact I was using a serial port for a battery backup and then switched to a USB battery backup. If Belkin can't come up with a fix before the 30 day return policy I will just take it back and get a APC brand which I should have done in the first place. Thanks for all the replys guys.
