Computer wont post

Recommended Posts

Ok, i have a problem i think is due to BIOS not sure though. I have pulled everything, and tested the processor in another computer all work. Now when i turn on this box, everything comes on like it is going to boot then it won't even beep like it normally does after it posts.

Was it working before? What's the specs? Is this your system in your sig? If so, pull the CMOS battery and leave it out for about 10 minutes, and make sure that your ATX connector is disconnected as well. I found out the hard way this weekend that some of the newer boards take much longer to clear their BIOS settings than older ones did...

system specs are similar except for the video card which is a gf2 64meg. it was working before but my friend kicked it when he was drunk and doesnt know what happened to it because it wasnt working the next day.

I will pull the battery out and the power and leave it and see

Hmmm - this kinda reminds me of something that happened with a m8's PC, altho slightly different. I realise you may well have done this already, though not as a diagnostic measure, but try turning off the switch on the PSU, unplugging the power cord, plugging it back in again & turn on.

With his PC it conked out & refused to come back to life if you happened to tilt it more than a few degrees whilst powered up, but I discovered the above solution through much trial & error. I think his PSU had some sort of anti-tilt thing in it. I know there's the possibility of it just being a loose connection, but it always required the exact same amount of tilt [in any direction] to cause it to happen & didn't matter what position you started it off in.

Oh, & just incase you're wondering - his PSU's a Macron MPT-301.

An Abit mobo should definately beep when you turn it on, either once (everything is OK) or several times (various error codes). If you don't have the speaker connected correctly you wont hear the beeps though. Does it beep if you power it up without memory ?

As you say "everything comes on" it appears that your fans, lights etc do receive power. Do you have fans that are connected to the mobo - do they turn on ?

Remove the ATX-power connector from the mobo, short the cmos jumper and try again (just another way of doing what clutch already suggested).

Im not getting beeps but i will **** with the PC speaker. I think i also have a PCI video card around here someplace.

This is what happens, all the power stuff is connected, PC's drives and everything spin up, fans and all. HD light stays on solid, and nothing beeps or is displayed on my screen. Ive tried seeing if it was that the CPU fan wasnt on FAN2 but i tried that and FAN1 and neither work.

Im going to take everything out and reseat it all and see if i can't find any problems with connections.

Just do your ****** with the speaker, an Abit mobo beeps, always, especially if something is wrong with it. I'd guess you just have a few cables connected upside down.

Don't mess around with too many things at once, just get that beep, and you'll know if its an error code or not (one familiar beep= everyhing is OK)

Those symptoms remind me of a loose or reversed IDE cable. Is that possible?

BIOS is most likely gone. I have reseated everything, and i made sure i reconnected all the connectors right, and still everything spins up fans and all but no power to the monitor. I don't even get a beep, i made sure the speaker worked. I still get no beeps no nothing. Sooo im thinking that the BIOS is dead. Which is odd because the same thing happened on his old board...

If i get the chance i will switch the BIOS on his board and my board out and see...

I know the exact symptoms about 2 years ago. The only difference was that everytime I rebooted, it took less and less time before it hang. I had to shutdown, wait 1-2 min, then restart and it would either hang in BIOS or simply before even reaching the Floppy boot sequence, leaving me with no options. I couldn't even boot from floppy to flash the BIOS or something....after next CtrlAltDel it took LESS time before it died, and so on...the sequence was repeatable after I powered off and started again.

I remember downloading a game demo from the (now defunct) 3dfiles.com website. It was a motocross game, you were riding a bike jumping on hills and stuff. At one point I was in the air, I hit a cloud, then I saw something written (?!?) in front of me, then the system rebooted!!

And from then on, the stuff described above happened.

I have NO clue to what might have caused it...other than something that completely phucked my BIOS. (virus?).

There are viruses that "flash" your bios (the CIH virus for example- at least a few years old) That could explain why this happened on a previous board also...

Did you try to shortcut the CMOS jumper ?

Anyhow, no beep sounds like a dead bios.

Yeah i tried shorting the CMOS jumper, and it didn't do anything. He probably got a Virus, because he goes to stupid non-reputable sites and downloads all sorts of crap, and doesnt even run a Virus scanner. Then again kicking your computer doesnt help all the much either.

Have you tried botting the computer only with the components it needs?

Remove all cables/cards etc.etc...

I noticed you said you cleared the CMOS but are you sure that you did? If you short the jumper properly then you will be unable to turn on the computer. Now remove the power card. Set the jumper back to previous position. Replace power cord. Boot up computer.

Also make sure that the mobo is not shorting out against the case.

I recently had a similar situation as yours but it was caused by a bad HD. Plug in IDE cable and computer boots but no beeps. Unplug IDE cable and computer boots.

The KT7A bios is alot less helpful when something goes wrong than my VP6 bios. frown
