Seeking "Virtual" Dial up over Cable solution...

Recommended Posts

At work we are behind Corporate firewalls and proxies.

So all machines, including our servers are part of a larger WAN.

Which are not accessible from the outside internet.

We do have a Dial-up system so various users are allowed to dial in directly to the network.

I am a Systems Operator at one of the HeadQuarters Offices.

I have been trying to find out a way that I can access the network for support and various other tasks via my cable modem at home.

I realize I could just dial in, but I have a cable Modem and share a phone line with roommates so tying up the phone line to do work on the weekends isn't an option. And getting another Line in my apartment isn't practical.

Is there some type of program or service that will allow me to "virtually" dial up, or allow me to connect to my LAN at work?

I'm sure I could do minor changes to the server but anything drastic would never get through the Admin.

Your help is appreciated.

Thank you

Ancker-

Your company is most likely interconnected with a VPN solution; This differs from the leased line approach you describe in that your company would not own all the cable between its various satellites. There is little benefit to the leased line approach, as modern VPN implementations are nearly impervious to intrusion, and are extremely expensive by comparison.

IF that is the case, then you need to request from your IT powers that be a VPN remote client as well as login authentication (not to the network, to the firewall) They may or may not require you to have a defined fixed IP to do this, depending on the software they are using; if it isnt... I suggest getting an IP phone so your roommates can use the phone while you're online... wink

cheers, and good luck!
