voodoo2 on win2000

Recommended Posts

I seem to have a very common problem with the voodoo2 card on win2000. I've searched the forum, and found some similar problems, but no solutions that works.

I have a voodoo2 card of unknown brand (which have worked very well in windows98/me with the reference drivers), so there's nothing wrong with the card itself. I can install the drivers successfully, without conflicts of any kind.

However, when I reboot the computer I get the errormessage "_GlideInitEnvironment: glide2x.dll expected Voodoo^2, none detected".

This seem to indicate that I infact wouldn't have a voodoo2 board, when I know for sure that I do.

I have tried two different drivers:

Voodoo2 Driver kit Version: 1.02.00 and the Anthony Toste unofficial drivers.

After many installation/uninstallations both drivers give me the same problem. It's strange though, because I seem to remember that only the first driver gave me this problem in the "beginning".

Any help would be appreciated.

What seems to be happening is that it is looking for the Glide drivers not that it isn't recognizing the card. One fellow who was having your same problem wrote this "As you may know Voodoo2s only have reference drivers in Windows NT/2000/XP which some games cannot use (or to be more correct find). Games which usually work with Glide in ME and 98 don't in Windows NT/2000/XP. This problem is caused by where Windows places the drivers (Windows NT/2000/XP has a different foldering system for drivers). Voodoo drivers are now placed in Windows System32 folder where in Windows 9x they are placed in Windows System. So to get glide working in Windows NT/2000/XP simply unpack your drivers and copy the glide drivers and place them into your Windows System folder, which is most often C:\Winnt\System32 (you may run a risk by doing this). This may allow some games to work under Glide. ..."

Here are two web references to what may be alpha or beta drivers for the Voodoo2 and W2k/XP: http://www.ntcompatible.com/3dfxfaq.shtml

I don't believe that the Voodoo2 is supported by W2k. Depending on your motherboard and how soon it will be before you upgrade it or buy a new computer, you might think about a new card.

I have a Celeron 500.

Anyway, thought I should say that I finally got it working now. Don't know what I did, but I just decided I should give it a last try. I did use the v2-w2k-1.02.00-beta.zip drivers (the official ones I believe). However, I copied all the .dll files to the system and the system32 folders "manually". I don't believe that's the reason it worked this time though.

I must have done something wrong earlier, but doesn't matter now smile
