IE 6.0 help

Recommended Posts

i was wondering why, after deleting temp internet files, and clearing history, i'm still finding "history" in the address bar.

let me explain just a tad though, i mean after i clear it all, there's nothing listed when you check the drop down menu on the address bar, but when you type in a letter into the address bar, it finds old sites that have been visited. how do i clean that crap out on a system running xp pro and ie 6?

thanks

You probably went to Tools-Internet Options-General and clicked on the button "Clear History." What you seem to also get rid of is AutoComplete. Click on the "Content" Tab. Click on the AutoComplete Button. If you want it to not find a webpage as you are typing it in, uncheck the Web Addresses check box. If you want it to get rid of passwords and forms, you can clear them and uncheck their boxes. Sometimes you have to then shut down IE and bring it up again for it to take effect.

Now if you want to really clean sweep everything - tempfiles, cookies, etc., you can use a piece of software from www.iolo.com called System Mechanic. There is also a script that will do this for free (I can't remember the name), but it will have to perform this task with a reboot since these have to be deleted under "Dos". When you do this know that some webpages do place cookies on your machine to enable you not to have to type login's and these will disappear.

Hope this helps.

yeah i don't want to lose a few specific cookies, and when you mentioned the autocomplete i had thought of that earlier, but couldn't think of how to get to it....

i'm not at home right now, so i can't check, but on 98 it tells you to clear the web addresses (in contents) from the clear history part under the general tab. i'm assuming though i'd only have to clear the forms one, if i don't want to loose passwords?

You can leave the forms and passwords intact. Don't push the buttons. There are three checkboxes: Web Addresses, Forms, Passwords. Just clear the check from the Web Addresses. It should behave then the way you want.
