As a matter of fact it does work. It is a bit fast though:P

First you need something called VDMSound. It is a sound emulator for win NT in short (DOS sound that is). You can get it from here:

http://www.ece.mcgill.ca/~vromas/vdmsound/

After installing it you run the setup. You go to the Game directory and right click on install and choose "Run with VDMS"

After you set your sound card. (VDMS help files explain what settings you should choose)

You run the game in the same way "Run with VDMS" colonize.bat

Happy Colonization

U.

Well, if you have it then it is fine. But where to find such a priceless work of art is another question.(I am just exhausted do not mind my dramatization etc.)

Quite frankly i lost my ambition for it. I have been looking for it on and off for years in UK, Germany, France wherever i go. I have even searched the "illegal" abandonware sites. No Luck whatsoever!

You might be able to contact customer service and say I have the dos version can you send me the windows version? In addition to the abandonware sites you might also try ebay and half.com.

Good luck to ya,

My husband and I both have Win2k on our computers. Colonization works on his system and not on mine. Could anyone help me to get it to work? I'm a serious Colonization addict...

I'm currently running Windows 2k Service Pack 3.

My fiancee was able to install Colonization and run it from the CD but not from the C drive, and it would not let her save games.

I discovered this two-pronged problem was two-fold.

1) The C drive was formatted using NTFS. Since NTFS was developed after Colonization was published, it didn't know how to read its supporting files off an NTFS drive.

2) The game ran off the CD because it knew how to read the game off the CD drive. However, the configuration file on the CD probably points to a location on the CD drive. Since the CD is write-protected...no saving was possible.

SOLUTION: Install the game on a FAT16 or FAT32(*). I installed Colonization on the D drive (FAT32) and viola! The game now runs & savegames will work. laugh

...but the sound problem remains! I tried downloading and installing VDMSound, but I can't figure out how the heck one is supposed to configure the blasted thing. According to an earlier poster, I'm supposed to feed VDMSound some configuration settings for my sound card, but I'm not sure how or where to do this. Even the vaunted VDMS Launchpad doesn't seem to help me out. ;( ;( ;(

(*) For those not in the know: NTFS stands for NT Filesystem FATxx stands for File Allocation Table (the 16 means 16bit, 32 means 32 bit).

I finally got the VDMSound shortcut to work. It was basically user error.

1. Adding a VDMSound shortcut (GUI method) is done using the right-click on the file method. This wasn't all that obvious after downloading it and even reading the unstructions. (Note: the GUI wizard needs an additional component to be downloaded and installed before it works. Uykucu gives the link to the site where you can get both.

2. I hadn't used the DOS sound configuration program that ships with Colonization. It was set to NO SOUND.

All I can say is "Doh!" 8)

Now my fiancee and I are in retro-gaming bliss, grooving to classic midi tunes from the imperial period. laugh 8)

Hi all!

I'm also experiencing some problems when running this terribly addictive game.

Colonization for Windows under W2K ran great, no problem... until one day, unexpectedly, it just stopped working.

I run the Colonize.exe file, as usual, and it just happens *nothing*.

NTDVM and wowexec are running in the process list, but the window of the game just doesn't appear.

Of course, i've tried to reinstall it, but no improvement frown. I've also downloaded wing.dll again.

Please! help me! I HAVE to go on discovering Youth Fountains and all that!!!

Thanks a lot in advance.

Colonization for Windows is available via the KaZaa network, or I can upload it to ppl who really need it smile I also have the DOS version.

Contact me at nospam_mikkelkc@hotmail.com

(remove nospam_ from Email address)

BTW I haven't made it work under Win2K yet and am about to install Win98 - when trying to install under Win2K (setup.exe) says it needs the file install.bin

Anyone around here to HAVE installed it and made it work under Win2K?

IF so, can U tell me how, and which version U used?

Pls. reply to my Email address!!
