Choppy sound

Recommended Posts

Okay guys, slightly strange problem here that is really doing my head in. I just did a fresh install of win2k, installed all the latest drivers and updated to sp2. The problem is, when I play any kind of sound file (mp3, midi etc..) on my comp, regardless of the program I use, the sound is very choppy. It's normal for a few seconds, then it slows down, then normal, then slow etc. It's fine with music off a CD, but anything off the hard drive has this problem. I've tried playing with different hardware accelerations levels and sample conversion rates, but the problem remains. I just migrated from win98, which never had this problem. Any ideas as to how to solve this prob? Here are my specs:

Athlon 850mhz

MSI K7T pro

-using on board AC97 sound

256mb Ram

Highpoint ATA133 hard disk controller

60Gb Ibm HD

Tnt2 Ultra

Cheers in advance

Hmmmm, seen something similar with my friends machine except his crackled all the time. Not sure if it's the same thing or not. This may sound off but try using diff video modes ie 16bit colour. I found on my mates machine if he was in 16 bit it was fine.

In the end he went back to 98 till he brought a new sound card.

P.S. Is that Mobo based on the VIA KT133 chipset?

Onboard sound sucks. Very CPU intensive. I built a PIII 866 for my dad, and with the AC '97 audio, the sound in even simple games would stutter. Disabled it and threw in a SB Live, and all is well.
