stand_56 0 Posted July 2, 2002 Does anybody know what the "win 16 subsystem" is and how to manipulate it? At times under XP when I try to open an old GUI based application, I'll get a message that the win 16 subsystem is low on memory, and that I should restart the computer. I thought that all those applications were supposed to run in their own virtual machines. I've got the ones in question set up to run in their own memory space...but it seems to be of no avail. stand_56 0 Posted November 11, 2002 The Win 16 subsystem resources message was caused by a poorly behaved 32 bit app that was running up to the maximum allowable gdi resources. In the registry, there are a few keys whose names end in handlequota, and which default to 10000. Changing the gdi quota one to 3000 made the problems I'd been having with resources go away. A couple of other people who've had the same problem ought to look in task manager for ill behaved applications. If they find massive numbers of gdi objects or user objects in use by one or more applications, they then know the cause of their problem. Share this post Link to post
