shevloff 0 Posted July 22, 2002 I recently upgraded my Compaq Presario model 7598 to 256mb and installing a Windows XP upgrade to my windows98. The CD burner doesnt work and I get a message saying Extended memory manager already installed - XMS driver not installed. I have asked Compaq for help but they say that model is not supported in XP. I asked them for the manufacturer of the CD drives and was told CD is Compaq OEM SC140S and CD burner is IDE CDR/RW 4x4x24. Can I get the appropriate drivers and if so where. Help please Thank you Neville S Share this post Link to post
DosFreak 2 Posted July 22, 2002 Okay, 1. DId you upgrade over Windows 98 or did you perform a clean install and insert the Windows 98 disc when prompted by Windows XP setup? 2. CDR's do not require drivers. They just require softeware. I suggest Nero Burning Rom. If that is too complicated for you then grab a copy of Adaptec EZ CD Creator 5. Buy I HIGHLY recommend NERO. 3. When/Where do you receive this XMS error? 4. What CDR software are you currently using? Share this post Link to post
shevloff 0 Posted July 23, 2002 1. I upgraded over windows 98 2. Thank u for the recommendation 3. Mr.Guvernment 0 Posted July 23, 2002 yeah ditch the comcrap software, and use nero or adaptec. Also, a clean install is ALOT better, since XP is more NT kernal based, not 9x. almost any cd burner is compatible in XP, more like COMpaq is not compatible with XP! Share this post Link to post
DosFreak 2 Posted July 23, 2002 oh, and 4x burners are ancient. Grab a 24x. I just bought 2 Liteon 48x12x48x CDR's for $93 apiece. A 24x is substantially cheaper. Also you get burn-proof which gets rid of buffer-under run errors. You also may get a copy of Adaptec or Nero with the CDR. Share this post Link to post
shevloff 0 Posted July 23, 2002 Dear "DOS Freak and Mr Guvernment" Thank you so much for your assistance. You are all right about the software. I burnt a music CD with MusicMatch and had no trouble (Burner was recognized). Will take both your advice when I am back in town . Will be away till Sept 1 and probably not be near a PC Neville S Share this post Link to post
