pmistry 0 Posted August 10, 2002 Man I need a new PC but in Quake 3, 1024x768 resolution, 16x Anisoptropic (ATI method), full textures, 32-bit textures, 32-bit color, no V-Sync, High Quality sound, ATI Catalyst 2.2, I get around 70 FPS. Cranking it up to 1280 I still get around 65 FPS, as you can see I am severely CPU limited. This is with Radeon 8500 LE / 128MB, no O/C. This is on an Athlon 750 Classic and 512 Megs of PC133 RAM. 7200 RPM ATA66 Hard Disk, Windows 2000 SP2 (although 98SE and XP are the same) Share this post Link to post
pmistry 0 Posted August 11, 2002 Id software games dictate my next upgrade, right now Quake 3 and RTCW run great on my system so its all good. Doom 3 and Quake 4 will dictate the next upgrade. Before I had a 486 and Quake wouldn't run so I got a Pentium, then I needed something better for Quake 2 so I got a card with GL support, then for Quake 3 I needed the Athlon. DosFreak 2 Posted August 12, 2002 Haven't benchmarked Q3 in awhile (been away)...but I doubt they have changed that much. Also in case you guys didn't know Q3Bench is an excellent Q3 engine benchmarking tool. Last I heard Q3Bench had a bug in it and the author was redoing it...but I dunno if he has released the latest ver yet. Supposedly he was working on JK2 and on Q3 engine games into his benchmark. You can email him at www.g256.com I think. DosFreak 2 Posted August 12, 2002 teh Carmack speaketh: http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=33453&cid=3619372 http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=34863&cid=3784210 GF3 cards will be comfortable with Doom 3 it seems. Probly in the 1024X768 and below area. Where GF4+ will likely be 1280X1024-1600. Share this post Link to post
imtim2 0 Posted August 13, 2002 DosFreak will the GF4 ti 4400 and GF4 ti 4600 beable to do doom 3 with all details on high at 1024x768 with at least at 60 fps minimize frame rates? Could i even go up a higher resolution maybe on doom 3 with all details on high like at 1600x1200? I have a feeling not but thats ok 1024x768 resolution i want at least on doom3. imtim2 0 Posted August 13, 2002 DosFreak you have a Leadtek WinFast A250 Ultra (GF4 Ti4600 128mb DDR) C=300Mhz M=650Mhz, DDR ram, and the latest mobo chipset on your Abit KX7-333R mobo i can see. In quake 3 arena with all details on high and at 1600x1200 you get 131.7 fps I just tested my system which is a GF4 ti 4400 overclocked to GF4 ti 4600 speeds (300/650) and at 1600x1200 in quake 3 arena with all details on high and everything on i get 122.9 fps. But i am amazed i get so high because i am on a older Abit KT7A raid mobo with the KT133A chipset, 256 mb of pc133 sdram, and a Athlon XP 1800+. I didn't think upgrading to DDR would only give me around 8.8 more fps more. Thats not even noticeable. I am disappointed that going to a new mobo and ddr would only raise fps a single digit. Thats not worth it to me. But maybe i am wrong. Maybe other games have a bigger 20 to 50 fps increase with ddr ram. But i am not holding my breath that other games would increase more than 8.8 fps more with upgrading to a new mobo and ddr ram. Share this post Link to post
DosFreak 2 Posted August 13, 2002 intim2, at 1280X1024+ it's all about the video card when you have a fast processor. Quake 3 is such an old game that a P3 1ghz is more than enough for it processor-wise. That's why your seeing such a small increase in speeds between my chipset and yours. Basically your system is too powerful for Q3. Alec, When I benchmark I revert Nvidia drivers to default settings. With no AA or Ansiotrop. Just default Det settings. I then benchmark. The reason why I don't have AA,Ansio in my benchmark results like I used to is because I think I was lazy and I didn't wanna go to the trouble. When a new ver of Q3bench comes out I'll probly rebench. Or are you saying that you want my results for AA,Ansio @ 1024X768? If so I'll rebench at that res when I get home if ya want but basically we'll all pretty much be the same with our ti4600's. Share this post Link to post
DosFreak 2 Posted August 13, 2002 We should start a new thread with JK2. That's the latest incarnation of the Q3 engine and more intensive. Share this post Link to post
imtim2 0 Posted August 13, 2002 DosFreak ok so with JK2, GTA3, and all the other new games at like 1024x768 i would be missing about 20 to 50 fps without having ddr ram correct? I am sure at 1600x1200 it would still not be a big difference in the newer games. Just tried quake 3 arena at 1024x768 and i get 158.5fps. You get at 1024X768 181.8 fps So thats a 23.3 fps difference. Those 20 fps could say if a game is playable or not at 1024x768 i bet. But i see what you are saying now. Thanks. FrogMaster 0 Posted August 15, 2002 Just my contribution; I ran the four demo on my current rig: Screen 1024x768, all 32 bits, everything maxed out with hq sound - 190 fps without antialiasing and anisotropic filtering - 103 fps with 4x antialiasing and and 8x anisotropic filtering (gorgeous display) Mobo is ASUS A7V333 with 1 Gig Ddram cl 2 Samsung Processor is Athlon XP 1700+ running on 160 MHz fsb (1760 MHz) Video is Leadtek GeForce4 4600 ultra at 320/725 MHz OS is Win2k/sp3 Lot of stuff running in the background that I never deactivate (hey, real world ) . Probably 10 more fps on a bare system??? I guess I will have another rig when DIII comes out Share this post Link to post
FrogMaster 0 Posted August 15, 2002 8) Update, same as above but with Quincunx antialiasing instead of 4x : 141 fps. Quality seems better to me - less blurred display Share this post Link to post
imtim2 0 Posted August 16, 2002 I see no difference in any games with FSAA or AF filtering onmaximum. I tried quake 3 arena, RTCW, SOF2, Nascar racing games, flying games, GTA3, etc. Saw no difference at all with FSAA and AF off then with FSAA and AF on maximum. I do get a performence hit so i know its working FSAA and AF on maximum. I just can't noitice a difference. I try to play most of the time at 1600x1200 when i can in games. If i can't then i play mostly at 1024x768 or the highest resolution i can play at. I even tried FSAA and AF on maximum at 1024x768 but still saw no difference. I guess i don't look good enough to see the difference or something. Am i the only one that sees no difference with FSAA and AF off to FSAA and AF on maximum in games? Share this post Link to post
DosFreak 2 Posted August 16, 2002 Basically, Ansiotrop will remove the blurriness. Load up a Q3/SS level and look off in the distance at the ground. Now enable Ansiotrop. See the diff? FSAA removes the jaggies. @ 1600X1200 it'll be harder to see the diff in most games. Load up 1024X768 and enable/disable and you'll be able to tell more easily. In games such as ST:BC where lines are in your face more often it doesn't really matter what res you use because jaggies will always be there unless you use FSAA. More curvy games such as Q3/SS are hardy to notice at higher res. Share this post Link to post
imtim2 0 Posted August 16, 2002 DosFreak i have tested out FSAA and AF like that but i still notice no difference. I guess not everyone can see the difference that much. Share this post Link to post
Jerry Atrik 0 Posted August 16, 2002 yea my screen was kinda blurry then i noticed my glasses were sitting on the desk next to me Share this post Link to post
pmistry 0 Posted August 17, 2002 Play a game at 640 resolution and then turn on AF, AA you should see some major improvements. Share this post Link to post
JP- 0 Posted August 17, 2002 OK well running that demo was pretty shocking, all 3 seconds of it 1024x768 with max quailty graphics on demo4. No AA of AF = 217.6fps 4x AA * 8x AF = 97.8fps (bit disapointing ) 4x AA only =117.3fps P4@2400, Ti4400@Ti4600 Thats on a q3 install that i just did 5mins ago. Share this post Link to post
pmistry 0 Posted August 19, 2002 Heh, if I disable sound my score jumps to 101.3, hmmm, if I set it to low quality I get around 70 or so just like high quality. Therefore, would a better sound card give me better frame rates? Right now I am using a Sound Blaster Live! Value. What about the Audigy? Share this post Link to post
