Security using a DSL modem and router in DMZ mode

Running 2k, a Verizon DSL modem, a Netgear router RT314 in the DMZ mode, and 2 computers without a firewall, what can I do for security other than passwords?

 

I really don't want to run a firewall, the program ICUII needs UDP and TCP/IP port ranging that the 314 can't do and I want to share between both computers.

 

If you use a password on 1 user account that you logiun with, can't someone login under any other accounts that don't have a password as the administrator account for example?

 

I'm really confused on this issue of security. To put it another way, I want file sharing between both computers but not file sharing on the internet.

Yea, ok...............I started to look at that link you gave, If I understood half of that I probably wouldn't be here asking these questions in the first place!

 

Having said that, questions:

 

1. If you DON'T have a browser open, does that change the accessiblity of the computer from the outside?

 

2. The other user accounts, are they accessible if you aren't logged on with them? In other words, if I log in as a certain user w/ adm. rights, can someone type 'administrator' and get in if it didn't have a password?

 

I do know you can filter ports, but I haven't done that. It has been more of a problem to open them rather than close them to the programs I want to use. Namely the music sharing replacements to Napster.

 

The video conferencing program ICUII needs UDP AND TCP'IP port rangeing that the Netgear doesn't do, hence the DMZ setup.

I do appreaciate all you wrote. I am envious of your knowledge, but as it stands I really don't know where to begin since there are so many issues.

I'm not happy with the Netgear RT314 router I have.

The biggest problem is tring to understand Indian dialog, as in the country of India!

That's where their tech support is based! It's bad enough to farm it out to another call center, but India? Can't understand them!

 

The router itself is discontinued and I couldn't get the newer firmware loaded. I needed port ranging which the old version didn't support.

 

I was looking at the Linksys routers, they seem to be the most popular ones like SoundBlasters, but hopefully without all the software problems that Creative has and lack of enough tech support people.
